The hockey season promised to
be a very successful one, with
a team that had shown great
promise over the years. It started in fine
fashion with wins against St Peter’s and
Exeter Cathedral. Exeter were a stiffer
opposition, but we held out for a rare
0-0 draw, with some excellent defending
from both sides and outstanding work
from Harry Prettejohn in goal.
At the IAPS competition, we didn’t
show the best version of ourselves and
were slightly overawed by the occasion,
resulting in some frustrating losses mixed
in with some good wins. Back into
normal matches, the boys really began to
find their flow and wins against Queen’s
College and Wellington followed,
alongside an excellent showing in the
Devon Cup which saw us qualify for the
Regionals at Millfield. A tough loss to an
excellent King’s Hall side was possibly
one of the best displays of the season,
only to be surpassed by an amazing
victory over an unbeaten Blundell’s side
the following week. The game ended
5-4 and the boys all showed outstanding
resilience and determination, this
personified by the captain James Berry
who did not stop for the whole match.
The Regionals proved to be a great
experience and one that the boys will
have taken a lot from and they should
be proud for reaching this level, but be
determined to improve on this next time
they face this opportunity.
The season was enjoyable and the
improvement made by the team,
outstanding.
The under 15’s have made great
progress this year and their results
don’t necessarily truly reflect their
potential as a side. Their first opposition
came in the form of Exeter School, they
were narrowly defeated 2.1. Although
Bailey Deignan’s most impressive goal
showcased his ever clinical threat, the
team couldn’t quite reach for the second
or winning goal, despite being the
controlling force for the majority of the
game.
Over the course of the next few weeks,
the under 15As ground out some hard
and intensive sessions and emerged
transformed for it. Their next opposition
would come in the form of Wellington
School. Once again, these young men
would dictate the lions share of the play
but now they had learned their lesson
and were unwilling to let a combative
Wellington side overthrow them. The
group held on for a fantastic 2-1 win.
Bartholomew Grainger proving to
be a thorn in the Wellington defence
throughout. The backline held firm with
a newly formed partnership of Rory
Summer and Elliot Pocknell. These two
gave the side a new robust spine that
allowed Joshua Bratt to distribute from
deep and for Lewie Harrison and Sam
Burns to generate attacking momentum
with their cutting and Incisive runs.
Signs of promise were evident during
two defeats to both West Buckland and
Blundell’s. In both scenarios these young
men took on two very accomplished
sides with a depleted depth, nonetheless
they showed defensive resolve and
their corner routine looked to be ever
improving.
In the final match of the season, they gave
a true account of their capabilities. Noah
Taylor had by now well and truly settled
into his captaincy and with returning
talents of Tom Lawrence added to the
side the team looked ready to stamp
their authority on the challenge at hand.
The team played the game at an electric
pass, they probed down all sections
of the pitch and were relentless in their
defensive press. Their short corner well
rehearsed and effective. The scoreline of
8-0 clearly portrayed their authority and
progression.
It is clear to see that the future of Mount
Kelly hockey is bright, but they must
remain diligent and decided to reach the
heights that are within their reach.
