SWIMMING
As the school year comes to a close, the
swimmers are in full preparation mode for
their big summer competitions. As they
have finished with academic commitments
for the summer, it allows a nice run-in
period for the swimmers to focus hard on
the last few weeks build up to allow for
maximum performance.
First up was the 4 Mount Kelly swimmers
who were selected to represent
Great Britain at the European Junior
Championships in Bucharest, Romania.
Accompanied by coach Greg King-Limb,
the swimmers were an outstanding
example for the school and helped
contribute to a hugely successful trip for
the National Team. In all, the 4 swimmers
(Calvin Fry, Matthew Ward, Erin Little &
Hollie Widdows) achieved 1 Gold Medal
(Matthew), 3 Silver Medals (Erin, Hollie &
Calvin), 2 Bronze Medals (Erin & Hollie),
10 Open Mount Kelly Records, 5 Scottish
Records, 11 Final Swims and 8 Semi-Final
Swims. A wonderful experience for the
young swimmers and something for them
to build on.
Back on home soil, the summer Nationals
events kicked off and what a summer it
turned out to be for the Mount Kelly swim
team – the most successful in the history
of the programme. A truly remarkable
week in Sheffield at British Nationals saw
the team win top club with a total of 52
medals (22 Gold, 14 Silver, 16 Bronze)
beating our previous best of 17 total
medals. The standout from this meet was
coming away with 7 medals from the 12
relay races whilst taking a clean sweep of
Golds in the 3 relays for the boys 14-16
years age group.
Our small Irish contingent of swimmers
packed a big punch in Dublin coming away
with 5 medals between the 6 swimmers
and a National title going to Grace Conroy.
With just the sole swimmer making the trip
north of the border to Scottish Nationals
in Aberdeen, Connor Meyers picked up
a Bronze medal in the 800m Freestyle
alongside 3 other finals appearances.
We also had 5 swimmers representing
the programme at Welsh Nationals and
they continued the success elsewhere by
bringing home 9 medals and 5 National
titles (Anthony Davies, Katie Bamborough
x2, Breanna Davies & Sophie Brassington).
Back in Sheffield for English Nationals the
success continued with 4 Golds, 4 Silvers
and 2 Bronzes and 23 finals swims.
The eyes of the swimming world
descended on Birmingham this summer
for the big stage and the return of the
Commonwealth Games to home soil.
Mount Kelly had representation from
current pupils Harry Robinson and Ronny
Hallett swimming for Isle of Man and
Guernsey respectively. Both Sixth Form
pupils have a family connection to the
games – Harry following in the footsteps
of his mother and sister before him, and
Ronny lucky enough to share a relay team
with his brother. An amazing experience
for both boys to race against some of the
best swimmers in the world across the
week, racing against World and Olympic
Champions and world record holders, all
whilst mixing daily in the athletes village.
Not content with just turning up and
enjoying themselves, both Harry and
Ronny were able to set multiple personal
bests and swim in finals under the big
lights with the world watching.
