POSTGRADUATE REGULATIONS & SYLLABUSES 2012 - 2013<br />
THE FACULTY OF HUMANITIES & EDUCATION<br />
REQUIREMENTS FOR COMPLETION<br />
OF A PHD DEGREE<br />
1. a. A c<strong>and</strong>idate may be required to attend courses during<br />
the period <strong>of</strong> registration, <strong>and</strong> may be required to write<br />
examinations. Such requirement must be approved by<br />
the <strong>Faculty</strong> Sub-Committee at the time <strong>of</strong> registration<br />
<strong>of</strong> the student.<br />
b. A c<strong>and</strong>idate registered for full-time studies will be<br />
required to present a thesis on an approved subject<br />
not less than 2 years, <strong>and</strong> not more than 5 years, after<br />
full registration.<br />
c. Part-time c<strong>and</strong>idates will be required to present their<br />
thesis not less than 3 years, <strong>and</strong> not more than 7 years,<br />
after full registration<br />
2. <strong>The</strong> length <strong>of</strong> the thesis shall be in accordance with<br />
specifications laid down by the Departments <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Faculty</strong>,<br />
but should not exceed 80,000 words excluding footnotes<br />
<strong>and</strong> appendices. <strong>The</strong> Board for Graduate Studies may in<br />
special circumstances give permission for this limit to be<br />
exceeded.<br />
3. A thesis will not be deemed adequate unless:<br />
• it is judged to be a new contribution to knowledge<br />
• it shows clear evidence <strong>of</strong> original research<br />
• it is worthy <strong>of</strong> publication.<br />
4. A c<strong>and</strong>idate for the PhD will be required to take an oral<br />
examination on the general field <strong>of</strong> study <strong>and</strong> on the thesis<br />
submitted. Whenever possible, the External Examiner<br />
should be present at the oral examination. In his absence,<br />
his written report shall be made available to the other<br />
examiners at the oral examination.<br />
5. A c<strong>and</strong>idate, after consideration <strong>of</strong> his thesis by the Board<br />
<strong>of</strong> Examiners <strong>and</strong> after oral examination may be:<br />
(i) recommended to Senate for the award <strong>of</strong> the degree<br />
(ii) required to resubmit within 18 months but not<br />
required to repeat the oral examination<br />
(iii) required to resubmit his thesis <strong>and</strong> repeat the oral<br />
examination on one subsequent occasion within<br />
eighteen (18) months from the decision <strong>of</strong> the Board<br />
for Graduate Studies.<br />
REQUIREMENTS FOR COMPLETION<br />
OF THE MA BY COURSEWORK<br />
1. <strong>The</strong> degree <strong>of</strong> MA by coursework is at present <strong>of</strong>fered in<br />
the following subjects: Cultural Studies, Creative Design:<br />
Entrepreneurship, History, Literatures in English, <strong>and</strong><br />
Spanish.<br />
2. <strong>The</strong> details <strong>of</strong> the regulations governing acceptance<br />
into these courses, their CONTENT, <strong>and</strong> the award <strong>of</strong> the<br />
degree vary, <strong>and</strong> may be obtained from the Departments<br />
concerned. However, the following general conditions<br />
usually apply:<br />
• <strong>The</strong>course<strong>of</strong>studyusuallylastsonecalendaryear(two<br />
calendar years for part-time students), <strong>and</strong> consists <strong>of</strong><br />
three courses <strong>and</strong> the writing <strong>of</strong> a thesis. Each course<br />
normally leads to one three-hour examination. At<br />
present, in some cases only part-time students are<br />
admitted.<br />
• C<strong>and</strong>idates must normally pass in all three courses<br />
<strong>and</strong> in the research paper before being awarded the<br />
MA degree.<br />
