POSTGRADUATE REGULATIONS & SYLLABUSES 2012 - 2013<br />

THE FACULTY OF HUMANITIES & EDUCATION<br />

CONTENT<br />

Participants will choose elective pr<strong>of</strong>essional development<br />

assignments from the following fields:<br />

• Sexual health<br />

• Family planning/reproductive health<br />

• HFLE<br />

• Advertising <strong>and</strong> media<br />

• Nutrition <strong>and</strong> related areas<br />

• Physical activity <strong>and</strong> exercise<br />

• Environment<br />

• Occupational Health <strong>and</strong> Safety<br />

• Drugs <strong>and</strong> alcohol<br />

• In-school or other institutional monitoring frame with a<br />

health promotion perspective<br />

Alternative fieldwork proposals will be considered by the unit<br />

coordinator. All fieldwork must have prior approval <strong>of</strong> the unit<br />

coordinator.<br />

Major competencies to be developed<br />

• Skills in the observation <strong>and</strong> evaluation <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

practice<br />

• Capacity for critical evaluation <strong>of</strong> personal knowledge <strong>and</strong><br />

practice<br />

• Positive attitudes to seeking alternative models <strong>and</strong><br />

paradigms <strong>of</strong> practice<br />

• Capacity to seek innovation <strong>and</strong> improvement, <strong>and</strong> to<br />

adapt <strong>and</strong> apply it to personal practice<br />

ASSESSMENT -100% coursework as follows:<br />

Oral presentation <strong>of</strong> field report 20%<br />

Submission <strong>of</strong> a fieldwork report consisting <strong>of</strong> field notes/<br />

journal, analysis <strong>of</strong> the observations, analysis <strong>of</strong> the pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

development benefits for the participant 80%<br />

6.6 EDRS 6900 - Research Project (10 credits)<br />

Course Overview<br />

<strong>The</strong> field <strong>of</strong> health <strong>and</strong> human relationships in education in<br />

the Caribbean has many aspects that are largely unexplored.<br />

<strong>The</strong> importance <strong>of</strong> deepening research in this field has become<br />

increasingly apparent in view <strong>of</strong> the relentless expansion <strong>of</strong> the<br />

HIV epidemic, <strong>and</strong> the increase in chronic diseases. For students<br />

gaining academic <strong>and</strong> research competencies, the<br />

research component <strong>of</strong> the M.Ed. (Health Promotion) degree<br />

will add substantially to the Caribbean evidence-base.<br />

Participants will be expected to participate in graduate research<br />

seminars. <strong>The</strong>se seminars are zero-rated, but attendance is<br />

compulsory, <strong>and</strong> each participant will be expected to present<br />

his/her research proposal in one <strong>of</strong> the seminars.<br />

OBJECTIVES<br />

At the end <strong>of</strong> this course, participants will be able to:<br />

• Conceptualize, plan, execute, analyze, <strong>and</strong> write up a<br />

research project which makes a significant original<br />

contribution to the literature.<br />

• Background as setting <strong>and</strong> intellectual ancestry<br />

• Conceptualisation/Statement <strong>of</strong> the problem<br />

• Purpose, research questions, <strong>and</strong> expected outcomes<br />

• Literature review<br />

• Methodology<br />

• Data collection, presentation <strong>of</strong> findings <strong>and</strong> data analysis<br />

• Conclusion<br />

Major competencies to be developed<br />

• Research design, planning, execution, analysis, <strong>and</strong> writeup.<br />
