<strong>Postgraduate</strong> Diploma in Teaching<br />

English to Speakers <strong>of</strong> Other<br />

Languages (TESOL) <strong>and</strong> Master in<br />

English Language (TESOL)<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Postgraduate</strong> Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers<br />

<strong>of</strong> Other Languages (TESOL) prepares university (Honours)<br />

graduates to teach English to speakers <strong>of</strong> other languages. <strong>The</strong>y<br />

are expected to have a degree in a Language or Linguistics, but<br />

graduates from other disciplines may be considered. Those with<br />

no background in Linguistics will be required to take courses<br />

LING 1001, LING 1002 <strong>and</strong> LING 1005 as prerequisites.<br />

AIM:<br />

To fully equip participating students with the practical skills <strong>and</strong><br />

theoretical knowledge for TESOL practice.<br />

COURSE LISTING:<br />

C<strong>and</strong>idates must take five semester-long courses <strong>and</strong> one<br />

Teaching Practicum. <strong>The</strong> following courses constitute the<br />

<strong>and</strong> Research Report Project) 4<br />

PROGRAMME STATUS<br />

<strong>The</strong> programme will be <strong>of</strong>fered over one year in in 2012/2013.<br />

CREDITS WEIGHTING<br />

Each course will constitute 4 credits.<br />

ASSESSMENT<br />

All courses, except the LING 5104 / LING 5106, will have 50%<br />

coursework <strong>and</strong> 50% examination. <strong>The</strong> two courses will be<br />

assessed by 100% coursework. <strong>The</strong> coursework weighting is<br />

necessitated by the very critical practical dem<strong>and</strong>s <strong>of</strong> such<br />

a programme. A successful c<strong>and</strong>idate must achieve at least<br />

50% in all courses (<strong>and</strong> in both coursework <strong>and</strong> examination<br />

components <strong>of</strong> each course) as well as the Research Report. A<br />

c<strong>and</strong>idate achieving over 70% will be awarded the <strong>Postgraduate</strong><br />

Diploma with Distinction<br />

Master in English Language (TESOL)<br />

On completion <strong>of</strong> one year In the programme <strong>and</strong> with a B+<br />

average, students may upgrade to the Master in English Language<br />

(TESOL). <strong>The</strong>y will be asked to add specific prerequisites to bring<br />

them on par with students in the MA In English Language, <strong>and</strong><br />

will add two courses from the English Language programme<br />

from the following:<br />

COURSE CODE: LING 5101<br />

COURSE TITLE: LANGUAGE ACQUISITION AND LEARNING:<br />

THEORY AND PRACTICE<br />

NUMBER OF CREDITS: 4<br />

PRE-REQUISITES: LING 1001, LING 1002, LING 1005<br />

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course prepares students to teach<br />

English to speakers <strong>of</strong> other languages by ensuring that they are<br />

fully cognisant with the nature <strong>of</strong> language as communication,<br />

<strong>and</strong> with a range <strong>of</strong> information—both theoretical <strong>and</strong><br />

practical—on how languages are acquired in natural settings<br />

as well as learnt in formal classroom settings. <strong>The</strong>y also need<br />

to be acquainted with the essential differences between<br />

early <strong>and</strong> later language acquisition processes, <strong>and</strong> to have<br />

some awareness <strong>and</strong> underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> psycholinguistic <strong>and</strong><br />

neurolinguistic information, which explain these processes.<br />

COURSE CODE: LING 5102<br />

COURSE TITLE: STRUCTURE OF THE ENGLISH<br />

LANGUAGE: ISSUES FOR TESOL<br />

NUMBER OF CREDITS: 4<br />

PRE-REQUISITES: LING 1001, LING 1002, LING 1005<br />

COURSE DESCRIPTION: English language teachers need to<br />

have a solid grasp <strong>of</strong> the structure <strong>of</strong> the grammar <strong>and</strong> sound<br />

system <strong>of</strong> modern English. <strong>The</strong>y also need to comprehend its<br />

range <strong>of</strong> usage in relation to other language varieties—both<br />

locally <strong>and</strong> globally—<strong>and</strong> to come to terms with the notion <strong>of</strong><br />

International English. In addition, they must be able to equip<br />

their students with the same knowledge. This course not only<br />

gives them the knowledge base necessary but also discusses<br />

approaches to classroom h<strong>and</strong>ling <strong>of</strong> key areas.
