4. In some programmes, applicants may have to write an<br />
entrance examination or may have to do qualifying courses.<br />
In the latter instance, the student will be deemed to be a<br />
qualifying student.<br />
MPHIL/PHD PROGRAMMES<br />
Students will be considered for the MPhil/PhD programmes if<br />
they satisfy the following criteria:<br />
1. C<strong>and</strong>idates seeking entry to the MPhil programme should<br />
hold a Bachelor’s degree (Upper Second Class Honours or<br />
above) in the area they wish to pursue.<br />
2. C<strong>and</strong>idates seeking entry to the PhD programmes should<br />
hold a Master degree from an approved university, with a<br />
speciality in the area <strong>of</strong> study.<br />
3. Students may be required to attend an interview prior to<br />
being accepted.<br />
4. Students applying for MPhil or PhD degrees must prepare<br />
an appropriate research proposal for consideration.<br />
5. All postgraduate students seeking a research degree are<br />
normally required to register first for the MPhil degree.<br />
6. Later transfer to the PhD programme may be made if<br />
the M.Phil student’s supervisor <strong>and</strong> the Departmental<br />
Graduate Supervision Committee recommend it, <strong>and</strong> if<br />
the recommendation is supported by the <strong>Faculty</strong>’s Sub-<br />
Committee on Graduate Studies <strong>and</strong> approved by the<br />
Board for Graduate Studies.<br />

Qualifying Examinations<br />
a. An applicant may be:<br />
• admitted without a Qualifying Examination<br />
• required to pass a Qualifying Examination before<br />
being fully registered for postgraduate studies<br />
• refused admission.<br />
b. <strong>The</strong> nature <strong>of</strong> the Qualifying Examination shall be<br />
determined by the Department to which the c<strong>and</strong>idate<br />
requires admission, but shall be subject to the <strong>Faculty</strong> Sub-<br />
Committee on Graduate Studies.<br />
c. A c<strong>and</strong>idate who fails a required Qualifying Examination<br />
will not normally be permitted to re-sit the examination.<br />
PART-TIME STUDIES<br />
1. Students may be registered for full-time or part-time<br />
studies. No student may be registered for full-time studies<br />
if he spends an average <strong>of</strong> nine or more hours a week in<br />
paid employment.<br />
2. Regulations concerning the length <strong>of</strong> periods <strong>of</strong> study for<br />
the award <strong>of</strong> postgraduate degrees to part-time students<br />
are given in the relevant sections below. In every other<br />
respect, e.g., qualifications for admission, attendance at<br />
seminars, conditions <strong>of</strong> award <strong>of</strong> the degree, etc., part-time<br />
students are subject to the same regulations as full-time<br />
students.<br />
SUPERVISION<br />
1. Whenever possible, each Department, or appropriate unit<br />
within a Department, shall have a Graduate Supervision<br />
Committee.<br />
2. <strong>The</strong> Graduate Supervision Committee shall propose to the<br />
<strong>Faculty</strong> Sub-Committee for Graduate Studies a Supervisor<br />
or Supervisors <strong>of</strong> experience appropriate to the proposed<br />
field <strong>of</strong> study <strong>of</strong> each c<strong>and</strong>idate.<br />
3. <strong>Postgraduate</strong> students are required to consult with their<br />
Supervisor(s) in person, at intervals to be specified by<br />
the Supervisor(s) but normally not less than once a term.<br />
However, a c<strong>and</strong>idate not resident in the same territory<br />
as his Supervisor(s) may be permitted to report in writing,<br />
except that a c<strong>and</strong>idate who does not already hold a<br />
degree from this university, is required to have face-to-face<br />
contact with his Supervisor(s) at least twice during his first<br />
year <strong>of</strong> registration.<br />
THESES AND DISSERTATIONS<br />
<strong>The</strong>ses <strong>and</strong> dissertations presented for a post-graduate degree<br />
in this <strong>Faculty</strong> must be written according to the stylistic<br />
conventions adopted <strong>and</strong> prescribed by the relevant School,<br />
Department, or Unit.<br />
ORAL EXAMINATIONS<br />
<strong>The</strong> oral examination <strong>of</strong> a c<strong>and</strong>idate presenting a thesis or<br />
dissertation will be chaired by the Chairman <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Faculty</strong> Sub-<br />
Committee for Graduate Studies, or his nominee, who will also<br />
be responsible for seeing that a report on the examination is<br />
prepared. <strong>The</strong> report shall be signed by all the Examiners present<br />
<strong>and</strong> the Chairman, <strong>and</strong> forwarded to the Board for Graduate<br />
Studies.<br />
EXAMINATIONS AND PROGRESS<br />
Qualifying Examinations:<br />
C<strong>and</strong>idates will not normally be allowed to repeat Qualifying<br />
Examinations.<br />
A full-time c<strong>and</strong>idate failing more than two courses in any one<br />
semester will normally be required to withdraw.<br />
A part-time c<strong>and</strong>idate failing more than half <strong>of</strong> the courses for<br />
which he/she is registered over an academic year will normally<br />
be required to withdraw.
