THE FACULTY OF HUMANITIES & EDUCATION<br />
MA Literatures in English<br />
<strong>The</strong> MA programme by coursework <strong>and</strong> research paper targets<br />
graduates who hold a first degree in English from UWI or from<br />
a recognized university. It is a two-year part-time programme<br />
with a maximum completion period <strong>of</strong> three (3) calendar years.<br />
Admission Requirements<br />
Applicants must have at least a Lower Second Class Honours<br />
degree with a clear B grade in four second <strong>and</strong> third level<br />
English courses.<br />
C<strong>and</strong>idates without these requirements will be asked to<br />
successfully complete the required courses before being<br />
accepted into the programme, or to take a qualifying exam.<br />
Programme <strong>of</strong> Study<br />
<strong>The</strong> MA is designed to expose students to a range <strong>of</strong> subject<br />
areas relative to the study <strong>of</strong> literatures in English. Courses will<br />
be under a selection <strong>of</strong> areas that include Cultural <strong>and</strong> Critical<br />
<strong>The</strong>ory, West Indian Literature, Postcolonial Literatures, Diaspora,<br />
<strong>and</strong> Gender. <strong>The</strong> relevant courses available under these titles<br />
will be announced each academic year.<br />
<strong>The</strong> total weight <strong>of</strong> the programme is 44 credits, comprised <strong>of</strong> a<br />
total <strong>of</strong> eight (8) semester-long courses at four (4) credits each;<br />
including a compulsory course LITS 6690 Research Methods in<br />
Literary Discourse; <strong>and</strong> a research paper <strong>of</strong> 20,000-25,000 words<br />
at twelve (12) credits.<br />
For each course c<strong>and</strong>idates will be awarded marks for seminar<br />
participation <strong>and</strong> presentations, Individual response papers, <strong>and</strong><br />
a final six thous<strong>and</strong> word (6000) research coursework essay.<br />

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to help persons<br />
undertaking research degrees in the <strong>Humanities</strong> to develop the<br />
basic tools or graduate research.<br />
OBJECTIVES<br />
At the completion <strong>of</strong> this course, students should be able to:<br />
1. demonstrate an underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> the nature <strong>of</strong> research;<br />
2. specify the distinctions between research <strong>and</strong> other ways<br />
<strong>of</strong> knowing;<br />
3. identify various research paradigms;<br />
4. identify the appropriate areas <strong>of</strong> application for such<br />
paradigms;<br />
5. demonstrate an underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> the roles <strong>of</strong> research in<br />
academic settings;<br />
6. provide a satisfactory exploration <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Humanities</strong>;<br />
7. identify various stages in the research process <strong>and</strong> their<br />
particular characteristics.<br />
