COURSE TITLE: ARTS, CULTURE AND SOCIETY<br />

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This foundation course presents a<br />

mix <strong>of</strong> perspectives on culture, the arts, <strong>and</strong> their inter-sections<br />

with various sectors <strong>and</strong> concepts in Caribbean society. As a<br />

foundation course the aims are:<br />

• to ensure that students are sufficiently grounded in<br />

Caribbean cultural realities<br />

• to establish the thematic principles <strong>of</strong> the programme<br />

OBJECTIVES<br />

On completion students are expected to:<br />

1. have an appreciation/underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> the function <strong>and</strong><br />

value <strong>of</strong> the arts <strong>and</strong> expressive culture in the formation <strong>of</strong><br />

Caribbean society;<br />

2. underst<strong>and</strong> the present status <strong>of</strong> arts <strong>and</strong> culture in the<br />

region;<br />

3. appreciate the potential for arts <strong>and</strong> culture in social <strong>and</strong><br />

economic development <strong>of</strong> the Caribbean.<br />

CONTENT<br />

<strong>The</strong> Content <strong>of</strong> the course will focus on the following areas:<br />

• Definitions <strong>of</strong> Culture—traditional, popular, classical<br />

• Modules on the arts as social identity, arts as education,<br />

arts as economic activity <strong>and</strong> arts <strong>and</strong> culture as policy, arts<br />

<strong>and</strong> the law.<br />

Delivery<br />

<strong>The</strong> course will be delivered in a modular multi-disciplinary<br />

fashion drawing on the resources across the <strong>Faculty</strong>/Campus.<br />

ASSESSMENT<br />

Coursework: 40%<br />

(Written reports drawn from two <strong>of</strong> the areas under study.)<br />

COURSE TITLE: BUSINESS STRATEGY FOR THE ARTS<br />

NUMBER OF CREDITS: 3<br />

COURSE DESCRIPTION: <strong>The</strong> study <strong>of</strong> business strategy is<br />

principally concerned with the formulation <strong>and</strong> implementation<br />

<strong>of</strong> strategy <strong>and</strong> the importance <strong>of</strong> strategic decision-making in<br />

organizations. This course presents an integrated approach to<br />

strategic management theory <strong>and</strong> its application to arts <strong>and</strong><br />

cultural organizations, including indigenous <strong>and</strong> entrepreneurial<br />

management <strong>of</strong> the arts. Students will be exposed to a number<br />

<strong>of</strong> strategic management techniques that are critical to the<br />

success <strong>of</strong> strategy, including business plan <strong>and</strong> marketing plan<br />

formulation.<br />

OBJECTIVES<br />

Students will also be required to develop an underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong><br />

how to initiate, develop, <strong>and</strong> complete a project through the<br />

key phases <strong>of</strong> project management. <strong>The</strong>se skills are critical for<br />

organization development, <strong>and</strong> are applicable to one-time<br />

events or projects as well as ongoing concerns <strong>and</strong> businesses.<br />

• Strategic management process <strong>and</strong> the importance <strong>of</strong><br />

strategic planning<br />

• Strategic management <strong>of</strong> human resources<br />

• Key elements in strategic planning: Business plans <strong>and</strong><br />

• Managing change strategically<br />

COURSE TITLE: FUNDING AND FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT IN<br />

THE ARTS<br />

NUMBER OF CREDITS: 3<br />

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will focus on the analytical<br />

<strong>and</strong> decision-making processes involved in the financial<br />

management <strong>of</strong> arts <strong>and</strong> cultural industries. It will address issues<br />

related to the acquisition <strong>of</strong> financial resources <strong>and</strong> the effective<br />

management <strong>of</strong> these resources.<br />

OBJECTIVES<br />

Students will develop an underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> the processes<br />

involved in budgeting, pricing, cash-flow statement analysis,<br />

cost control, <strong>and</strong> asset management decisions. Students will<br />

gain an appreciation <strong>of</strong> the tools for financial control <strong>of</strong> any arts<br />

organisation or cultural industry.<br />

CONTENT<br />

• Basic economic principles <strong>of</strong> supply <strong>and</strong> dem<strong>and</strong>, present<br />

value <strong>and</strong> future value, depreciation <strong>and</strong> pricing<br />

• Organization for financial arrangement <strong>and</strong> the role <strong>of</strong> the<br />

principal <strong>of</strong>ficers <strong>of</strong> the organizations<br />

• Income sources, grant-seeking, philanthropy <strong>and</strong><br />

fundraising, fund accounting/reporting<br />

• Budget preparation <strong>and</strong> business planning<br />
