Rules for the Use <strong>of</strong> the School <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong><br />
Library<br />
1. All UWI undergraduate <strong>and</strong> graduate students wishing to<br />
register with the Library must present an up-to-date UWI<br />
identification card at the time <strong>of</strong> registering, <strong>and</strong> also at the<br />
beginning <strong>of</strong> each academic year.<br />
2. All readers must register with the Library before using<br />
facilities.<br />
3. Registered students in courses <strong>of</strong>fered by the School <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Education</strong> may borrow seven items.<br />
4. A pocket must be surrendered for each item borrowed.<br />
A reader is responsible for any book or other item for<br />
which the Library holds a loan form signed by the student.<br />
This responsibility ends only when the loan is <strong>of</strong>ficially<br />
cancelled.<br />
5. Readers’ pockets are not transferable. It is a serious <strong>of</strong>fence<br />
to lend or borrow pockets.<br />
6. Certain publications may, on no account, be removed from<br />
the Library. <strong>The</strong>se include reference books, bound journals,<br />
fragile materials, theses <strong>and</strong> dissertations.<br />
7. Items are normally loaned for two (2) weeks. <strong>The</strong>y may be<br />
renewed for another two-week period, provided they have<br />
not been requested by other readers. In any event, not<br />
more than two renewals will be allowed.<br />
8. Special Reserve items may be taken out on‘overnight’loans<br />
only by the staff <strong>and</strong> students <strong>of</strong> the School <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong>,<br />
provided that such items are not single copies. Such books<br />
may be checked out one (1) hour before closing time, <strong>and</strong><br />
must be returned by 0900 hours on the next working day.<br />
9. Non-Reserve items may also be checked out at least one<br />
hour before closing time. Borrowers are requested to<br />
examine materials thoroughly <strong>and</strong> report all damage,<br />
discrepancies, <strong>and</strong> irregularities to the Library Staff on<br />
duty.<br />
10. Periodicals may not be borrowed from the School <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Education</strong> Library.<br />
11. All materials loaned will be subject to recall by the Librarian<br />
at any time.<br />
12. Materials housed in the West Indian collection may not be<br />
removed from the Library.<br />
13. <strong>The</strong> Librarian is empowered to levy a fine upon all readers<br />
who fail to return library material within the prescribed<br />
period. <strong>The</strong> fine for late return <strong>of</strong> books will be fifty cents<br />
for each day the loan is overdue. This will apply equally to<br />
short- <strong>and</strong> long-term loans <strong>and</strong> books recalled to satisfy<br />
other borrowers’ requests which are not returned by the<br />
special time. <strong>The</strong> fine for late return <strong>of</strong> books reserved for<br />
overnight use will be twenty five cents per hour for the first<br />
three hours, after which, in addition to the fine, the reader’s<br />
overnight borrowing privileges will be suspended.<br />
14. <strong>The</strong> fines levied above shall not exceed $50.00 per item.<br />
Damage to Library material on loan to a reader should be<br />
reported immediately. <strong>The</strong> reader must pay the current<br />
cost <strong>of</strong> replacing a lost or seriously damaged book or other<br />
item, in addition to any fine which he may have incurred<br />
prior to reporting the loss or damage.<br />
15. If after due notice, a fine or replacement cost <strong>of</strong> item has not<br />
been paid, the Librarian is authorised to request the Bursar<br />
to arrange for the amount <strong>of</strong> the fine to be recovered by<br />
the university. Borrowing privileges will also automatically<br />
be suspended.<br />
16. All registered students are also entitled to use the Main<br />
Library. Registration must be done at the Circulation Desk<br />
at the Main Library, <strong>and</strong> university identification cards must<br />
be presented.<br />
