POSTGRADUATE REGULATIONS & SYLLABUSES 2012 - 2013<br />
THE FACULTY OF HUMANITIES & EDUCATION<br />
MPhil/PhD in French<br />
See General Regulations for all programmes in the <strong>Faculty</strong><br />
MPhil <strong>and</strong> PhD students are required to pass the following<br />
Departmental courses (coursework <strong>and</strong> examinations):<br />
LITS 6699 - Methods <strong>of</strong> Research <strong>and</strong> Literary Scholarship<br />
LITS 6007 - Modern Critical <strong>The</strong>ory<br />
A c<strong>and</strong>idate for the M.Phil is required to read for courses totalling<br />
a minimum <strong>of</strong> six (6) credits <strong>and</strong> must pass both coursework <strong>and</strong><br />
the written examination before submitting the thesis.<br />
Students enrolled in the MPhil degree must satisfactorily<br />
complete at least two (2) research seminars.<br />
A c<strong>and</strong>idate for the PhD Is required to read for courses totalling<br />
a minimum <strong>of</strong> nine (9) credits <strong>and</strong> must pass both coursework<br />
<strong>and</strong> the written examination before submitting the thesis.<br />
Students enrolled in the PhD degree must satisfactorily<br />
complete at least three (3) research seminars.<br />
MA in Spanish<br />
Introduction<br />
<strong>The</strong> MA in Spanish is a part-time programme. Students are<br />
required to complete it in a maximum period <strong>of</strong> two (2) calendar<br />
years. <strong>The</strong> programme targets graduates who hold a BA in<br />
Spanish from UWI or a valid equivalent degree from another<br />
university.<br />
Admission Requirements<br />
<strong>The</strong> criteria for admission are as follows:<br />
1. At least a Lower Second class degree from UWI or<br />
equivalent.<br />
2. C<strong>and</strong>idates must have passed at least four (4) courses in<br />
Spanish in Year 2 <strong>and</strong> four in Year 3 <strong>of</strong> the B.A. programme,<br />
all at or above the B grade.<br />
3. C<strong>and</strong>idates who do not satisfy these requirements may be<br />
allowed to take a qualifying examination.<br />

1. One semester-long course at six (6) credits:<br />
LITS 6699 – Methods <strong>of</strong> Research <strong>and</strong> Literary Scholarship<br />
(Semester 1& Semester 2/Year 1 only)<br />
2. Two (2) semester courses (read in English) at four (4) credits<br />

COURSE TITLE: NARCOTRAFFICKING IN CONTEMPORARY<br />
COLOMBIAN NARRATIVE<br />
NUMBER OF CREDITS: 4<br />
PRE-REQUISITES: NONE<br />
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will expose students to a<br />
selected body <strong>of</strong> contemporary Colombian fiction which features<br />
key aspects <strong>of</strong> the drug trade in the country. Narcopolitics,<br />
narcoguerrilla activity, money laundering, <strong>and</strong> narcoterrorism<br />
are some <strong>of</strong> the themes treated by mainstream writers with<br />
admirable literary skills <strong>and</strong> verisimilitude. <strong>The</strong> texts focus on<br />
the violence <strong>of</strong> the 1990s <strong>and</strong> analyse the complex system<br />
<strong>of</strong> cultivation, processing, transportation, commercialization,<br />
control, <strong>and</strong> eradication <strong>of</strong> illicit drugs. <strong>The</strong> student will be able<br />
to analyse particular aspects <strong>of</strong> literary techniques that reflect<br />
the latest trends in Colombian literature.
