<strong>The</strong> <strong>Postgraduate</strong> Diploma in Interpreting Techniques is a<br />

COURSE TITLE: COMPUTER AND INTERNET TOOLS FOR THE<br />

INTERPRETER<br />

COURSE DESCRIPTION: ICTs are powerful tools, once language<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essionals know how to use them rationally in order to<br />

prepare for meetings. Interpreters will also become familiar<br />

with specific terms <strong>and</strong> set phrases used in the running <strong>of</strong><br />

international conferences.<br />

COURSE CODE: INTE 5001<br />

COURSE TITLE: CONSECUTIVE INTERPRETATION<br />

NUMBER OF CREDITS: 4<br />

COURSE DESCRIPTION: In a formal configuration, interpreters<br />

need to be able to perform their task without the help <strong>of</strong><br />

interpretation equipment, intervening in-between the<br />

respective speakers using coded notes to organise ideas on<br />

30-minute long speeches performing interpretation into target<br />

language.<br />

SEMESTER: YEAR LONG<br />

COURSE CODE: INTE 5002<br />

COURSE TITLE: SIMULTANEOUS INTERPRETATION<br />

NUMBER OF CREDITS: 12<br />

COURSE DESCRIPTION: In a conference setting with pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

equipment, interpreters must be familiar with microphones<br />

<strong>and</strong> consoles as well as with vocal techniques (Booth). In an<br />

outdoor or roving configuration, Interpreters need to be able to<br />

perform their task without the help <strong>of</strong> interpretation equipment<br />

(Whispering). All these exercises will be practiced on a range <strong>of</strong><br />

themes that will cover areas relevant to the Caribbean (trade,<br />

transportation, tourism, AIDS, natural disasters, human rights,<br />

environmental issues, energy, international relations, etc.).<br />

COURSE CODE: INTE 5004<br />

COURSE TITLE: PRACTICUM<br />

NUMBER OF CREDITS: Pass/fail<br />

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Since this is a pr<strong>of</strong>essional course that<br />

intends to prepare students to be functional once they graduate,<br />

it is important that they get the opportunity to work in one<br />

or more events organised in Trinidad <strong>and</strong> Tobago by the CITB<br />

(Caribbean Interpreting <strong>and</strong> Translation Bureau) <strong>of</strong> the UWI or<br />

at other events in real-life situations. Students will be paired <strong>of</strong>f<br />

for a minimum <strong>of</strong> 14 hours (or two working days) at multilingual<br />

events with seasoned interpreters who will be asked to assess<br />

their performance in conjunction with a staff member.<br />
