COVER STORY At the Cutting Edge of Beverage Filling US Packaging Machinery Business Relishing New Independence Designed to provide improved fill volume accuracy and ease of operation – the MPV filler for PET bottles Crown-Simplimatic, the US-based packaging machinery business, was bought from Crown Cork & Seal, Philadelphia, in the spring of 1997. Headed by three former company executives from the packaging machinery division of the Crown Cork & Seal, the newlyindependent corporation was bought for US$ 105 million and has estimated annual sales of US$ 200 million. Areas of business are beverage filling lines, packaging equipment and material handling systems, including associated control systems. Nine plants are in operation in Europe and the Americas, employing a workforce of about 1000. Jerry L.East,B.Douglas Goodell and James W. Parker are the new managing directors of the enterprise. Jerry East, who is responsible for the filler business world-wide, commented , “As an independent company, we can focus all of our efforts on supplying the machinery and sys- The Can Jet Air Conveyor tems engineering needs of our customers today and on developing the technology and equipment that they will need tomorrow.” To support this strategy,investments are planned in the research and development facilities in Europe and the US and growth through acquisition is also being considered.“Our principal acquisition targets today are strong companies in labelling, inspection equipment or multi-packing machinery,” said James W. Parker, head of conveyor, handling systems business and corporate finance administration. Crown Simplimatic is focusing on the expansion of business in the growing markets of Europe, Latin America and the Asia-Pacific Region whilst also maintaining and building on its strength in North America. Innovative Design An ability to come up with innovative ways of conveying beverage containers is seen as the company’s greatest asset.
