2011 Algae Platform Review – Reviewer Comments
Reviewer Comments are direct transcripts of commentary and material provided by the Platform’s
Review Panel. They have not been edited or altered by the Biomass Program.
Reviewer: 5 Criteria Score: 3
Unfortunately, there was not enough detail presented to adequately evaluate success factors.
Reviewer: 6 Criteria Score: 5
The work presented addressed a waste stream, poultry litter, and a means (microalgae production) as a
means (among others) to treat it. THis was useful but there appeared to lack clear and comprehensive
trigger points for decision making.
Reviewer: 7 Criteria Score: 4
The project success factors do not appear to be defined in terms of technical and economic hurdles to
algal biofuel production.
5. Technology Transfer and Collaborations
Please comment on the degree to which the project adequately interfaces and coordinates with other
institutions and projects to provide additional benefits to the Biomass Program, such as publications,
awards, or others.
It is unclear whether there were any outputs that could be useful.
Reviewer: 2
This project's results are somewhat cautionary and should be shared with other DoE projects.
Reviewer: 5
It was unclear whether and how the results of these disparate lines of laboratory research would benefit
the Biomass Program.
Reviewer: 6
This was not well developed.
Reviewer: 7
If research results and theory indicate that the use of PLE is not a viable option for algal biofuel
production, valuable informatton sharing would be to reach these conclusions and explain the nutrient
charactorstics that are unsuitable.
6. Overall Impressions
Please provide an overall evaluation of the project, including strengths, weaknesses, the project approach,
scope, and any other overall comments.
