To defend against: Use these defense measures:<br />

Hit <strong>and</strong> run attacks • Continually review intelligence; brief staff <strong>and</strong> supervisory<br />

personnel on possible attacks. Go over defense plans.<br />

• Plan illumination of the area to eliminate the element of surprise.<br />

Refer to FM 21-60 <strong>for</strong> details on using illuminating grenades, flares,<br />

<strong>and</strong> expedients.<br />

• Detail night relief <strong>procedures</strong>; vary passwords.<br />

• Set up night patrols. Vary schedules <strong>and</strong> patrol routes.<br />

• Set up roving guards, particularly in the maintenance areas <strong>and</strong><br />

around the supply tent where weapons <strong>and</strong> ammunition are stored.<br />

• Set up checkpoints.<br />

• Vary locations of OPs, LPs, <strong>and</strong> weapons.<br />

• Stress light <strong>and</strong> noise discipline.<br />

• Stress the importance of reporting possible intelligence<br />

in<strong>for</strong>mation <strong>and</strong> reporting it accurately. Detail reporting <strong>procedures</strong> in TSOP.<br />

Ambushes of patrols • Prior to the move, brief personnel on the tactical situation.<br />

<strong>and</strong> the unit during<br />

moves to new sites • Review defense tactics <strong>and</strong> signals with troops<br />

• Require all personnel to be armed <strong>and</strong> able to return maximum<br />

volume of fire from positions in vehicles.<br />

• Strengthen vehicles with s<strong>and</strong>bags.<br />

• Have vehicles in the kill zone attempt to drive through the area<br />

while passengers return fire.<br />

• After moving to a point that can be defended, personnel should<br />

set up a perimeter defense.<br />

• Depending on the situation <strong>and</strong> terrain, have vehicles that have<br />

not entered the kill zone to disperse in staggered <strong>for</strong>m (oddnumbered<br />

vehicles to the left, even-numbered vehicles to the right) <strong>and</strong> seek<br />

cover. Personnel should then dismount <strong>and</strong> take up firing positions.<br />
