To defend against: Use these defense measures:<br />
*Attacks by guerrilla • Have personnel check status of LPs <strong>and</strong> OPs.<br />
b<strong>and</strong>s<br />
• Evacuate wounded <strong>and</strong> dead as soon as possible.<br />
• Relay cut wire.<br />
• Reposition weapons, LPs, OPs, <strong>and</strong> fighting positions that have<br />
been discovered.<br />
• Rearrange camouflage.<br />
• Change the meaning of fire signals <strong>and</strong> make sure all soldiers are<br />
aware of these changes.<br />
*Ambushes • Warn others of the ambush by releasing a smoke grenade or by<br />
sounding a designated warning signal.<br />
• Immediately in<strong>for</strong>m higher headquarters of the situation by radio.<br />
• In<strong>for</strong>m supporting or surrounding units on your situation.<br />
*When ambushed or attacked by guerrilla b<strong>and</strong>s, unit elements should vigorously return direct fire,<br />
<strong>and</strong> execute fire <strong>and</strong> maneuver battle drill against the enemy to prevent large number of friendly<br />
<strong>for</strong>ce casualties. FM 7-7J lists the battle drills that work well against these types of enemy's<br />
scenario attacks.<br />
• Making decisions <strong>and</strong> developing control measures by selecting <strong>and</strong> implementing the <strong>techniques</strong>,<br />
<strong>procedures</strong>, or plan most likely to eliminate unnecessary accident risks while completing the unit mission,<br />
collective <strong>and</strong> individual tasks, or operation in question.<br />
• Making safety <strong>and</strong> the use of risk control <strong>procedures</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ard practice by following these guidelines:<br />
•• Stress the ties between leadership responsibilities/awareness <strong>and</strong> safety. Each member of the<br />
chain of comm<strong>and</strong> must keep in mind the overall purpose of unit safety is to keep soldiers free from injury.<br />
•• Embed risk control measures in unit SOP/TSOP, training, <strong>and</strong> job aids.<br />
•• Conduct all training to st<strong>and</strong>ard. Safe per<strong>for</strong>mance is a result of training to st<strong>and</strong>ard. Failure<br />
to train to the st<strong>and</strong>ard or to en<strong>for</strong>ce st<strong>and</strong>ards is the cause of many human-error-related accidents.
