Section’s own newsletter.<br />

Context<br />

The conference took place <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> “Basilica Industria” <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> small but bustl<strong>in</strong>g town of Hudson, NY. The “Basilica”<br />

location itself was not an academic classroom or an art gallery<br />

but a huge, semi-converted factory/warehouse with hopelessly<br />

high ceil<strong>in</strong>gs, exposed girders and <strong>in</strong>frastructure, tall<br />

w<strong>in</strong>dows, cracked concrete floors, and signs of decades of<br />

heavy use.<br />

Our meet<strong>in</strong>g space <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> North Hall featured on one<br />

side a large <strong>in</strong>stallation of angularly stacked wood pieces and<br />

August 13-15, 2010, <strong>in</strong> Hudson, NY<br />

“Sw<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g Pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs” titled “Gestures of Gratitude” by Laura Summer<br />

cloth by Mart<strong>in</strong> Summer (The Ascent) crowned with a<br />

sequence of seven small pa<strong>in</strong>ted wood objects and four pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

by Laura Summer (Saturn Sun Moon Earth), on <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r side a sequence of hang<strong>in</strong>g pa<strong>in</strong>ted cloth banners titled<br />

Gestures of Gratitude by Laura, and n<strong>in</strong>e pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs by six local<br />

artists hang<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> irregular places on <strong>the</strong> walls. A variety of<br />

hang<strong>in</strong>g cloths, banners, and curta<strong>in</strong>s were cont<strong>in</strong>uously manipulated<br />

and repositioned to adapt to <strong>the</strong> circumstances of<br />

almost every event. The tiered seat<strong>in</strong>g featured a wide variety<br />

of types of chairs <strong>in</strong> numerous 20th century styles (perhaps<br />

appropriate <strong>for</strong> a multicultural, multi-stylistic, <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary<br />

outlook like postmodernism). In <strong>the</strong> adjo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g “Large
