Renewal Courses <strong>in</strong> 2011,<br />

Wilton, NH<br />

This year will mark several firsts <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

annual Renewal Courses of five-day <strong>in</strong>tensives<br />

at <strong>the</strong> Center <strong>for</strong> Anthroposophy <strong>in</strong> Wilton, NH.<br />

Kar<strong>in</strong>e Munk F<strong>in</strong>ser, Coord<strong>in</strong>ator of Renewal<br />

Courses, reports on prospects <strong>for</strong> a busy and<br />

star-studded summer.<br />

This summer’s Renewal Courses celebrate<br />

<strong>the</strong> 150th birthday of <strong>Rudolf</strong> Ste<strong>in</strong>er with<br />

Virg<strong>in</strong>ia Sease from <strong>the</strong> leadership of <strong>the</strong><br />

School <strong>for</strong> Spiritual Science at <strong>the</strong><br />

Goe<strong>the</strong>anum <strong>in</strong> Dornach, Switzerland. She will<br />

offer a five-day course on “The Life and Work<br />

of <strong>Rudolf</strong> Ste<strong>in</strong>er” <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g elements of her<br />

research on <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>me of <strong>in</strong>itiation and <strong>the</strong><br />

New Mysteries.<br />

Among o<strong>the</strong>r first-time appearances at<br />

Renewal Courses:<br />

Douglas Sloan, professor emeritus at<br />

Teachers College Columbia University, will<br />

tackle <strong>the</strong> contemporary topic of <strong>the</strong> encounter<br />

with evil and its trans<strong>for</strong>mation.<br />

Philip Thatcher, General Secretary of<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Anthroposophical</strong> <strong>Society</strong> <strong>in</strong> Canada, will<br />

take up <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>me of heal<strong>in</strong>g words through<br />

<strong>the</strong> Medieval epic Parzival and <strong>Rudolf</strong> Ste<strong>in</strong>er’s<br />

Philosophy of Spiritual Activity.<br />

Jennifer Greene, director of <strong>the</strong> Water<br />

Research Center <strong>in</strong> Blue Hill, Ma<strong>in</strong>e, will<br />

explore <strong>the</strong> cosmic <strong>for</strong>ces that flow through<br />

water.<br />

Tobias Tuechelmann, MD, an active<br />

member <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> annual International Therapists<br />

Conferences <strong>in</strong> Dornach, will exam<strong>in</strong>e traumatic<br />

experiences <strong>in</strong> childhood, draw<strong>in</strong>g upon<br />

recent developments <strong>in</strong> neuroscience and<br />

child psychiatry.<br />

Van James, celebrated author and high<br />

school teacher from Hawaii, will offer a draw<strong>in</strong>g<br />

course based on <strong>the</strong> Waldorf curriculum,<br />

grades 1-12, as well as elements from his<br />

latest book.<br />

Marcy Schepker will <strong>in</strong>augurate a new<br />

workshop <strong>in</strong> needle-felt<strong>in</strong>g to create wall hang<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

<strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> classroom and <strong>the</strong> community.<br />

Return<strong>in</strong>g faculty members <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />

Christof Wiechert, outgo<strong>in</strong>g leader of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Pedagogical Section at <strong>the</strong> Goe<strong>the</strong>num,<br />

will present a new course on <strong>the</strong> health-br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g<br />

aspects of <strong>the</strong> Waldorf curriculum and <strong>the</strong><br />

teachers’ approach to education.<br />

Aonghus Gordon, with expert craftsmen<br />

from Rusk<strong>in</strong> Mill <strong>in</strong> England, will work through<br />

<strong>the</strong> crafts of soapmak<strong>in</strong>g, glassblow<strong>in</strong>g, woodwork<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

thread/fiber art, and clay.<br />

Janene P<strong>in</strong>g will return with a new<br />

course of marionette and shadow puppet<br />

<strong>the</strong>ater, focus<strong>in</strong>g upon a contemporary fairy<br />

tale, “The Bee Man or Orn.”<br />

Georg Locher will <strong>in</strong>vite teachers to work<br />

on two key texts by <strong>Rudolf</strong> Ste<strong>in</strong>er, Balance <strong>in</strong><br />

Teach<strong>in</strong>g and Study of Man, with an accompany<strong>in</strong>g<br />

immersion <strong>in</strong> wet-on-wet and veil<strong>in</strong>g<br />

techniques <strong>in</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> grades 6-8.<br />

Elizabeth Auer will help participants<br />

create armfuls of delightful projects aris<strong>in</strong>g<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Waldorf crafts curriculum <strong>for</strong> children<br />

aged 7-12.<br />

Iris Sullivan returns this year with a<br />

course on veilpa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g to school both professional<br />

artist and untra<strong>in</strong>ed apprentice alike.<br />

There are also even<strong>in</strong>g lectures, a<br />

professional eurythmy per<strong>for</strong>mance to<br />

celebrate <strong>Rudolf</strong> Ste<strong>in</strong>er, as well as our usual<br />

artistic soirees.<br />

The first series of <strong>the</strong>se courses run from<br />

Sunday, 26 June through Friday, 1 July 2011;<br />

<strong>the</strong> second week from Sunday, 3 July through<br />

Friday, 8 July.<br />

2011 Conference: Section <strong>for</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Social Sciences<br />

A conference is <strong>in</strong> plann<strong>in</strong>g to focus on<br />

<strong>the</strong> rights sphere, <strong>the</strong> social sphere of politics<br />

and social agreements, to take place <strong>in</strong><br />

Harlemville, NY, around <strong>the</strong> July 4 weekend.<br />

Under consideration is a 1-2 day ga<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong><br />

Section members followed by a 2-3 day open<br />

conference. The plann<strong>in</strong>g committee <strong>in</strong>cludes<br />

Peter Buckbee, Gary Lamb, and Luigi Morelli.<br />

The Pr<strong>in</strong>ceton Group at 75<br />

The Pr<strong>in</strong>ceton Group of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Anthroposophical</strong><br />

<strong>Society</strong> celebrated its 75th anniversary<br />

<strong>in</strong> 2010. Henry Hagens started it as a<br />

study group back <strong>in</strong> 1935. His wife, Emmy<br />

Hagens, taught at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Rudolf</strong> Ste<strong>in</strong>er School <strong>in</strong><br />

New York City. Henry had met with <strong>Rudolf</strong><br />

Ste<strong>in</strong>er <strong>in</strong> Germany be<strong>for</strong>e World War I. Initially<br />

<strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>in</strong>ceton Group was known as <strong>the</strong> “Henry<br />

Hagens Group.” The group is mentioned <strong>in</strong><br />

Hilda Deighton’s book “The Earliest Days of<br />

Anthroposophy <strong>in</strong> America.” Friedrich Hiebel,<br />

who later became a member of <strong>the</strong> Vorstand<br />

(Executive Council) at <strong>the</strong> Goe<strong>the</strong>anum, was a<br />

frequent lecturer while he was teach<strong>in</strong>g at<br />

Rutgers University. He conv<strong>in</strong>ced <strong>the</strong> group<br />

members to switch over from German to<br />

English at <strong>the</strong>ir meet<strong>in</strong>gs! The Group met at<br />

Virg<strong>in</strong>ia Sease with Herbert Hagens Sr. (right)<br />

and Jr.
