Consciousness-Soul) back as far as <strong>the</strong> Renaissance. Michael<br />
contrasted a picture of Leonardo’s Last Supper with a Gothic<br />
pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> same <strong>the</strong>me from about a hundred years earlier.<br />
One of <strong>the</strong> most obvious differences was <strong>the</strong> new use of<br />
l<strong>in</strong>ear perspective to create <strong>the</strong> realistic spatial illusions <strong>in</strong><br />
Leonardo’s pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g, represent<strong>in</strong>g a new identification by<br />
people of <strong>the</strong>ir selves with <strong>the</strong>ir physical bodies <strong>in</strong> space and<br />
with <strong>the</strong> materialist, scientific world view <strong>in</strong> general. At that<br />
time it was expression <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> visual arts that helped advance<br />
this new bodily identification and step <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> evolution of<br />
consciousness.<br />
Today a different side of our human nature is striv<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
awaken, and postmodernism is one symptom of <strong>the</strong> search<br />
<strong>for</strong> this. Alongside what scientific work can offer, <strong>the</strong> arts will<br />
become even more important <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> capacities<br />
humanity needs <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> future. In postmodernism art is no<br />
longer a matter of express<strong>in</strong>g someth<strong>in</strong>g but of becom<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
where <strong>the</strong> real work of art is myself. Thus, all areas of life need<br />
to be art. Ste<strong>in</strong>er says that <strong>the</strong> development of <strong>the</strong> new “Royal<br />
Art” (which will be a social art) <strong>in</strong>volves achiev<strong>in</strong>g control of<br />
<strong>the</strong> e<strong>the</strong>ric <strong>for</strong>ces. We will need to br<strong>in</strong>g liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong>ces <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong><br />
affairs of social life. This will be <strong>the</strong> next stage <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> great<br />
work of trans<strong>for</strong>m<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> earth itself <strong>in</strong>to a work of art.<br />
In his lecture “Prepar<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sixth Epoch” (which will<br />
beg<strong>in</strong> to arise ca. 3,500 A.D.) Ste<strong>in</strong>er speaks of three qualities<br />
that must be developed <strong>for</strong> this age of Spirit Self: a soul life of<br />
bro<strong>the</strong>rl<strong>in</strong>ess, freedom of thought, knowledge of <strong>the</strong> spirit<br />
(pneumatology). The development of Spirit Self <strong>in</strong>volves<br />
trans<strong>for</strong>m<strong>in</strong>g our astral body, our still-unfree life of th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
feel<strong>in</strong>g, and will<strong>in</strong>g. Every day we have <strong>the</strong> opportunity to<br />
work on becom<strong>in</strong>g more free <strong>in</strong> our th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g, feel<strong>in</strong>g, and<br />
will<strong>in</strong>g – or <strong>in</strong> our art with <strong>the</strong> qualities of color, <strong>for</strong>m, etc.<br />
F<strong>in</strong>ally, Michael briefly discussed <strong>the</strong> future human qualities<br />
that can be worked:<br />
1. Perceiv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> life <strong>for</strong>ces as qualities (vs. quantities)<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world.<br />
2. Mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> whole earth (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g humanity) <strong>in</strong>to<br />
a work of art<br />
3. Develop<strong>in</strong>g empathy, i.e., <strong>the</strong> capacity to enter <strong>in</strong>to<br />
<strong>the</strong> will of <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
4. Struggl<strong>in</strong>g to f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> right relationship to every<br />
one’s <strong>in</strong>ner freedom.<br />
5. Capacities to clairvoyantly perceive <strong>the</strong> spiritual<br />
becom<strong>in</strong>g more ma<strong>in</strong>stream (as will spiritual<br />
science as a result).<br />
6. Learn<strong>in</strong>g to build community on a foundation of<br />
free, diverse <strong>in</strong>dividuality (vs. on commonality).<br />
In relation to <strong>the</strong> arts (“<strong>the</strong> language of <strong>the</strong> gods”),<br />
Michael po<strong>in</strong>ted out that <strong>the</strong>y provide a school<strong>in</strong>g to become<br />
very exact (beyond <strong>the</strong> level of personal likes and dislikes) <strong>in</strong><br />
perceiv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> qualitative dimension (<strong>for</strong> example, qualities<br />
of colors, <strong>for</strong>ms, etc.). Although this perception occurs on<br />
<strong>the</strong> soul or astral level, it is actually an experience of <strong>the</strong><br />
