Dear Members & Friends<br />

After <strong>the</strong> “year of Darw<strong>in</strong>” and tributes to Chop<strong>in</strong>,<br />

Mahler, and o<strong>the</strong>r significant <strong>in</strong>dividuals recently, it is<br />

fitt<strong>in</strong>g that people around <strong>the</strong> world will be recogniz<strong>in</strong>g<br />

2011 as <strong>the</strong> 150th anniversary of <strong>Rudolf</strong> Ste<strong>in</strong>er, <strong>the</strong> lead<strong>in</strong>g<br />

esotericist of our time. His life accomplishments<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ue to amaze both young and old; his work has<br />

unfolded <strong>in</strong> a variety of practical ways, from Waldorf<br />

education to biodynamic agriculture, Camphill communities<br />

to <strong>the</strong> arts. Yet one also has a sense that <strong>the</strong> full<br />

potential of anthroposophy is yet to be realized, that much<br />

rema<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> seed <strong>for</strong>m, wait<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> a more general awak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> human consciousness.<br />

As part of my preparation <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> year ahead, I have<br />

been re-read<strong>in</strong>g several biographies of <strong>Rudolf</strong> Ste<strong>in</strong>er.<br />

There are many accounts from people who knew him.<br />

Even those outside of anthroposophical circles were deeply<br />

impressed by this extraord<strong>in</strong>ary <strong>in</strong>dividual. For example,<br />

Jules Sauerwe<strong>in</strong>, an esteemed journalist <strong>for</strong> Le Mat<strong>in</strong>, said:<br />

“I have known almost all monarchs on earth, almost all<br />

prime m<strong>in</strong>isters and military leaders. But nobody made<br />

such a last<strong>in</strong>g impression on me as <strong>the</strong> Austrian philosopher<br />

and occultist <strong>Rudolf</strong> Ste<strong>in</strong>er. He was <strong>the</strong> most <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g<br />

man I ever met... However powerful <strong>the</strong> statesmen<br />

were <strong>the</strong>y always struck me as actors not quite sure of <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

parts. But what delight to talk politics with Ste<strong>in</strong>er. Only<br />

so great and all-embrac<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>tellect is able to penetrate<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividual problems so correctly.” (Rudi Lissau, <strong>Rudolf</strong><br />

Ste<strong>in</strong>er, p. 48)<br />

Lisa Monges, a found<strong>in</strong>g member of <strong>the</strong> School of<br />

Eurythmy <strong>in</strong> Spr<strong>in</strong>g Valley and <strong>the</strong> person who sponsored<br />

me <strong>for</strong> membership <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Anthroposophical</strong> <strong>Society</strong> (after<br />

years of mow<strong>in</strong>g her lawn!) often told me stories of sitt<strong>in</strong>g<br />

at <strong>the</strong> d<strong>in</strong>ner table with <strong>Rudolf</strong> Ste<strong>in</strong>er: his warmth,<br />

humor, <strong>in</strong>sight and deep <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> every human be<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Thus it is particularly fitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> this time that <strong>the</strong> General<br />

Council has been work<strong>in</strong>g with three guid<strong>in</strong>g pr<strong>in</strong>ciples:<br />

Connect<strong>in</strong>g – with o<strong>the</strong>r human be<strong>in</strong>gs, members, friends,<br />

groups and branches, and spirit seekers work<strong>in</strong>g often<br />

From <strong>the</strong> General Secretary<br />

unseen alongside us.<br />

Serv<strong>in</strong>g – through <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>itiatives of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Society</strong> (such<br />

as <strong>the</strong> library, prison outreach, publications, etc.) but also<br />

more generally <strong>in</strong> terms of servant leadership and try<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

perceive <strong>the</strong> needs of <strong>the</strong> time.<br />

Deepen<strong>in</strong>g – <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ner work without which all <strong>the</strong><br />

above would not be susta<strong>in</strong>able. For this we are grateful <strong>for</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> path of personal development, specific meditative<br />

exercises, and above all, <strong>the</strong> School <strong>for</strong> Spiritual Science<br />

which stands as a foundation <strong>for</strong> renew<strong>in</strong>g spiritual<br />

research.<br />

I would like to <strong>in</strong>vite our readers to take up <strong>the</strong>se three<br />

aspects, connect<strong>in</strong>g, serv<strong>in</strong>g, and deepen<strong>in</strong>g as part of <strong>the</strong><br />

work ahead <strong>for</strong> 2011. In my meet<strong>in</strong>gs with members,<br />

branches and groups <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> next months, I <strong>in</strong>tend to also<br />

ask <strong>the</strong> question: What is your relationship to <strong>the</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of <strong>Rudolf</strong> Ste<strong>in</strong>er? I hope that this open<strong>in</strong>g question will<br />

spur good conversation and help us take <strong>the</strong> next steps<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

It is also particularly fitt<strong>in</strong>g, given what has been<br />

shared <strong>in</strong> this letter, that <strong>the</strong> Council has enthusiastically<br />

endorsed a name change <strong>for</strong> our newsletter. Upon <strong>the</strong><br />

recommendation of our talented editor, John Beck, and<br />

after a good period of reader and member consultation, we<br />

have taken <strong>the</strong> bold step to put our ideals front and center:<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g human. This header goes to <strong>the</strong> core of anthroposophy<br />

yet is accessible to a variety of readers. It is also a<br />

statement of our ongo<strong>in</strong>g search <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> universal human<br />

<strong>in</strong> a world so often divided by politics and strife. May <strong>the</strong><br />

ideal of be<strong>in</strong>g truly human spur us on to overcome our<br />

imperfections and f<strong>in</strong>d unity <strong>in</strong> our common striv<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

With best wishes <strong>for</strong> a commemorative year 2011,<br />

Tor<strong>in</strong> M F<strong>in</strong>ser<br />

General Secretary, <strong>Anthroposophical</strong> <strong>Society</strong> <strong>in</strong> America<br />
