From Creature to Creator: The Human Be<strong>in</strong>g and Our <strong>Future</strong> Evolution<br />

chooses and acknowledges. Then he can say: “Now I know<br />

why I am work<strong>in</strong>g with o<strong>the</strong>r people.” In this way <strong>the</strong>re<br />

arise out of human consciousness those social groups <strong>in</strong><br />

which material is created <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> spirits of <strong>the</strong> age, <strong>the</strong><br />

Spirits of Personality. And <strong>the</strong> anthroposophical society is<br />

a group of this k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong> which this connection is created on<br />

a basis of bro<strong>the</strong>rhood. This means noth<strong>in</strong>g else than that<br />

each <strong>in</strong>dividual is active <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> group <strong>in</strong> such a way that<br />

he acquires <strong>in</strong> himself all <strong>the</strong> good qualities that make him<br />

an image of <strong>the</strong> whole society. Thus all <strong>the</strong> thoughts,<br />

wealth of feel<strong>in</strong>g and virtues he develops through <strong>the</strong><br />

society he bestows as nourishment upon <strong>the</strong> Spirits of<br />

Personality.<br />

Hence <strong>in</strong> a society like this all that creates communal<br />

life is <strong>in</strong>separable from <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciple of <strong>in</strong>dividuality. Each<br />

s<strong>in</strong>gle member becomes capable through such a society of<br />

offer<strong>in</strong>g what she herself produces as a sacrifice to <strong>the</strong> Spirits<br />

of Personality. And each <strong>in</strong>dividual prepares herself to<br />

reach <strong>the</strong> level of those who are <strong>the</strong> most advanced, and<br />

who, as <strong>the</strong> result of spiritual tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g have progressed to<br />

<strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t where <strong>the</strong>y have <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g ideal: “When I<br />

th<strong>in</strong>k, I do not do so <strong>for</strong> my own satisfaction, but <strong>in</strong> order<br />

to create nourishment <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirits of Personality. I lay<br />

upon <strong>the</strong> altar of <strong>the</strong> Spirits of Personality my highest and<br />

most beautiful thoughts; and what I feel is not prompted<br />

by egoism, I feel it because it is to be nourishment <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Spirits of Personality. And what I can practice <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> way<br />

of virtue, I do not practice <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> sake of ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>fluence<br />

<strong>for</strong> myself, but <strong>in</strong> order to br<strong>in</strong>g it as a sacrifice to provide<br />

food <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirits of Personality.” Here we have placed<br />

be<strong>for</strong>e us as our ideal those whom we call <strong>the</strong> masters of<br />

wisdom and <strong>the</strong> masters of harmony and feel<strong>in</strong>g. For thus<br />

do <strong>the</strong>y th<strong>in</strong>k and prepare <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> development which will<br />

br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g nearer and nearer to <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t<br />

where we will always be creat<strong>in</strong>g what is new until we will<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ally develop a world from which <strong>the</strong> work<strong>in</strong>gs of <strong>the</strong> old<br />

causes will have disappeared, and out of which new light<br />

will stream <strong>for</strong>th <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> future. The world is not subject<br />

to perpetual metamorphosis <strong>in</strong>to different <strong>for</strong>ms, but <strong>the</strong><br />

old is perfected and becomes <strong>the</strong> vehicle of <strong>the</strong> new. Then<br />

even this will be thrown off and will disappear <strong>in</strong>to noth<strong>in</strong>gness,<br />

so that out of this noth<strong>in</strong>gness someth<strong>in</strong>g new<br />

78 • be<strong>in</strong>g human<br />

may arise. This is <strong>the</strong> tremendous idea of progress, that<br />

new th<strong>in</strong>gs can perpetually arise.<br />

But <strong>the</strong> worlds are complete <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>mselves, and you<br />

will have seen <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> example given that we cannot speak<br />

of anyth<strong>in</strong>g actually com<strong>in</strong>g to an end. It has been shown<br />

how on <strong>the</strong> one hand <strong>the</strong> Spirits of Personality lose <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

<strong>in</strong>fluence over <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g, but on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand<br />

how <strong>the</strong>y aga<strong>in</strong> pursue <strong>the</strong>ir own evolution. Thus ours is a<br />

world that is constantly be<strong>in</strong>g rejuvenated by new creations,<br />

yet it is also true that what is stripped off would<br />

h<strong>in</strong>der progress, and it is passed on so that o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

part can progress. Nobody should believe that he must<br />

allow someth<strong>in</strong>g to s<strong>in</strong>k <strong>in</strong>to noth<strong>in</strong>gness, <strong>for</strong> we have been<br />

given <strong>the</strong> possibility of creat<strong>in</strong>g out of noth<strong>in</strong>gness. What<br />

on Vulcan will prove itself to be someth<strong>in</strong>g new, will cont<strong>in</strong>ually<br />

build new <strong>for</strong>ms and discard <strong>the</strong> old, and what is<br />

thrown off will seek its own path.<br />

Evolution, <strong>in</strong>volution and creation out of noth<strong>in</strong>gness<br />

are <strong>the</strong> three concepts we have to apply <strong>in</strong> order to understand<br />

<strong>the</strong> evolution of world phenomena as it really is.<br />

Only by this means shall we arrive at accurate concepts<br />

that both enlighten <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g about <strong>the</strong> world and<br />

engender <strong>in</strong> us <strong>in</strong>ner warmth of feel<strong>in</strong>g. If we had to admit<br />

our <strong>in</strong>capacity to do anyth<strong>in</strong>g except create <strong>in</strong> accordance<br />

with impulses implanted <strong>in</strong>to us, this would not steel our<br />

will nor k<strong>in</strong>dle our hopes to <strong>the</strong> same extent as be<strong>in</strong>g able<br />

to say:<br />

“I can create my own life values and constantly add<br />

someth<strong>in</strong>g new to what has been given me as a foundation.<br />

My ancient heritage will <strong>in</strong> no way h<strong>in</strong>der me<br />

from creat<strong>in</strong>g new blossoms and fruits which will live<br />

on <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> future.”<br />

This, however, is part of what we can describe by say<strong>in</strong>g<br />

that <strong>the</strong> anthroposophical conception of <strong>the</strong> world<br />

gives <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g strength, hope and confidence <strong>in</strong><br />

life, <strong>for</strong> it shows us that we can, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> future, have a share<br />

<strong>in</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g at creations which, today, not only lie <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

womb of causality but <strong>in</strong> noth<strong>in</strong>gness. It shows us <strong>the</strong><br />

prospect that, through our own ef<strong>for</strong>ts, we are work<strong>in</strong>g our<br />

way <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> true sense of <strong>the</strong> word from be<strong>in</strong>g a ‘creature’<br />

to be<strong>in</strong>g a ‘creator.’
