So we see <strong>the</strong> com<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> Christ to <strong>the</strong> Earth as a<br />

fulfillment as it were of all that had been put <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong><br />

human be<strong>in</strong>g through Saturn, Sun and Moon. And <strong>the</strong><br />

Christ Event has given <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> greatest th<strong>in</strong>g<br />

possible, <strong>the</strong> power that makes us capable of liv<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>in</strong>to<br />

<strong>the</strong> perspectives of <strong>the</strong> future and of <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly creat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

out of relationships, out of all that is not predeterm<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

but depends on how <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g relates to <strong>the</strong> facts<br />

of <strong>the</strong> world around us, which is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> widest sense <strong>the</strong><br />

Holy Spirit. This aga<strong>in</strong> is an aspect of Christian esotericism.<br />

Christian esotericism is connected with <strong>the</strong> profoundest<br />

thought <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole of our evolution, <strong>the</strong><br />

thought of creation out of noth<strong>in</strong>gness.<br />

There<strong>for</strong>e no true <strong>the</strong>ory of evolution will ever be able<br />

to leave out <strong>the</strong> thought of creation out of noth<strong>in</strong>gness.<br />

Suppos<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>re were only evolution and <strong>in</strong>volution, <strong>the</strong>re<br />

would be eternal repetition like <strong>the</strong>re is with <strong>the</strong> plant, and<br />

on future Vulcan <strong>the</strong>re would be only what orig<strong>in</strong>ated on<br />

old Saturn. But <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> middle of our development creation<br />

out of noth<strong>in</strong>gness was added to evolution and <strong>in</strong>volution.<br />

After Saturn, Sun and Moon had passed away, Christ came<br />

to Earth as <strong>the</strong> enrich<strong>in</strong>g leaven which ensures that someth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

quite new will be <strong>the</strong>re on Vulcan, someth<strong>in</strong>g not<br />

yet present on Saturn. Whoever speaks of evolution and<br />

<strong>in</strong>volution only, will speak of development as though<br />

everyth<strong>in</strong>g were merely to repeat itself <strong>in</strong> circles. But such<br />

circles can never really expla<strong>in</strong> world evolution. Only when<br />

we add to evolution and <strong>in</strong>volution this creation out of<br />

noth<strong>in</strong>gness, that adds someth<strong>in</strong>g new to exist<strong>in</strong>g relationships,<br />

do we arrive at a real understand<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> world.<br />

Be<strong>in</strong>gs of a lower order show no more than a trace of<br />

what we called creation out of noth<strong>in</strong>gness. A lily of <strong>the</strong><br />

valley will always be a lily of <strong>the</strong> valley; at most <strong>the</strong> gardener<br />

could add someth<strong>in</strong>g to it from outside to which <strong>the</strong><br />

lily of <strong>the</strong> valley would never have atta<strong>in</strong>ed of itself. Then<br />

<strong>the</strong>re would be someth<strong>in</strong>g which with regard to <strong>the</strong> nature<br />

of <strong>the</strong> lily of <strong>the</strong> valley would be a creation out of noth<strong>in</strong>gness.<br />

Human be<strong>in</strong>gs, however, are ourselves capable of<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> our be<strong>in</strong>g this creation out of noth<strong>in</strong>gness.<br />

Yet <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g only becomes capable of do<strong>in</strong>g so,<br />

and advanc<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> freedom of <strong>in</strong>dividual creativity,<br />

through <strong>the</strong> greatest of all free deeds, and one which can<br />

serve us as an example. What is this greatest deed of freedom?<br />

It is that <strong>the</strong> creative and wise Word of our solar system<br />

Himself resolved to enter <strong>in</strong>to a human body and to<br />

take part <strong>in</strong> Earth evolution through a deed unconnected<br />

with any previous karma. There was no preced<strong>in</strong>g karma<br />

<strong>for</strong>c<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Christ to His resolution to enter a human<br />

body; He undertook to do it as a free deed entirely based<br />

upon <strong>for</strong>esee<strong>in</strong>g mank<strong>in</strong>d’s future evolution. This deed had<br />

no precedent, hav<strong>in</strong>g its orig<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> Him as a thought out of<br />

noth<strong>in</strong>gness, out of His pre-vision. This is a difficult concept,<br />

but it will always be <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> Christian esotericism,<br />

and everyth<strong>in</strong>g depends on our be<strong>in</strong>g able to add <strong>the</strong><br />

thought of creation out of noth<strong>in</strong>gness to those of evolution<br />

and <strong>in</strong>volution.<br />

When we are able to do this we shall acquire great<br />

ideals which, although <strong>the</strong>y may not extend to what may<br />

be called cosmic dimensions, are essentially connected with<br />

<strong>the</strong> question why, <strong>for</strong> <strong>in</strong>stance, we may jo<strong>in</strong> an anthroposophical<br />

society. To understand <strong>the</strong> purpose of an anthroposophical<br />

society we must return to <strong>the</strong> thought that we<br />

are work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirits of Personality, <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> spirits of<br />

<strong>the</strong> age. When a human be<strong>in</strong>g comes <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> world at<br />

birth, to start with she is educated by all manner of circumstances;<br />

<strong>the</strong>se <strong>in</strong>fluence her and <strong>for</strong>m <strong>the</strong> first step of<br />

her own creative activity. If only it could be clearly understood<br />

that <strong>the</strong> place where a <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g is born is<br />

only <strong>the</strong> first step, and that <strong>the</strong> prevail<strong>in</strong>g circumstances<br />

work upon her with overwhelm<strong>in</strong>g suggestive power. Let<br />

us try to imag<strong>in</strong>e how different a person’s circumstances<br />

would be were she to be born <strong>in</strong> Rome or Frankfurt <strong>in</strong>stead<br />

of <strong>in</strong> Constant<strong>in</strong>ople. Through her birth she would be<br />

placed <strong>in</strong> different circumstances, <strong>in</strong>to different religious<br />

affiliations. Under <strong>the</strong>se <strong>in</strong>fluences a certa<strong>in</strong> fanaticism<br />

could develop <strong>in</strong> her <strong>for</strong> Catholicism or Protestantism. If,<br />

through a slight turn of <strong>the</strong> wheel <strong>in</strong> karmic connections,<br />

she had been born <strong>in</strong> Constant<strong>in</strong>ople, might she not also<br />

have turned out to be quite a good Turk?<br />

Here you have an illustration of <strong>the</strong> suggestive <strong>for</strong>ce<br />

with which environmental conditions affect <strong>the</strong> human<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g. But <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g is able to extricate himself<br />

from <strong>the</strong> purely suggestive nature of conditions and unite<br />

with o<strong>the</strong>r people <strong>in</strong> accordance with pr<strong>in</strong>ciples he himself<br />
