Ste<strong>in</strong>erBooks Spiritual Research Symposium,<br />

A golden thread runs through all of<br />
<strong>Rudolf</strong> Ste<strong>in</strong>er’s teach<strong>in</strong>gs. From his earliest<br />
moments to his last breath, he sought to f<strong>in</strong>d<br />
a way <strong>for</strong> contemporary human be<strong>in</strong>gs to experience<br />
<strong>the</strong> reality that <strong>the</strong> world is a spiritual<br />
world and that human be<strong>in</strong>gs are embodied<br />
spiritual be<strong>in</strong>gs endowed with organs of both<br />
sensory and spiritual perception, and who are<br />
thus both visibly and <strong>in</strong>visibly connected, as<br />
<strong>the</strong> world itself is, with spiritual realities and,<br />
<strong>in</strong>deed, <strong>the</strong> source of all reality. In this way,<br />
<strong>Rudolf</strong> Ste<strong>in</strong>er gave us <strong>the</strong> task of realiz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
cont<strong>in</strong>uity, <strong>the</strong> non-duality, of <strong>the</strong> visible and<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>visible worlds. Where are we to beg<strong>in</strong>?<br />
How are we to f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> golden<br />
thread? As William Blake wrote:<br />

It will let you <strong>in</strong> at Heaven’s Gate<br />
Built <strong>in</strong> Jerusalem’s Wall.<br />
There are, of course, many ways to enter<br />
<strong>the</strong> labyr<strong>in</strong>th of anthroposophy, but <strong>Rudolf</strong><br />
Ste<strong>in</strong>er returned repeatedly throughout his life<br />
to <strong>the</strong> path of <strong>the</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>uity of life through<br />
death. Death understood as a metamorphosis<br />
of life, as a metamorphosis of love; this was<br />
Ste<strong>in</strong>er’s own experience. From childhood, he<br />
was aware both of <strong>the</strong> non-mortal spiritual<br />
essence of <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g—our “I”—and<br />
