Grow<strong>in</strong>g Holistic Science<br />

On a gray day last November we met with Craig Hol-<br />

drege, director and senior researcher of The Nature Institute<br />

<strong>in</strong> Ghent, NY, to talk about <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitute’s plans <strong>for</strong> expansion.<br />

Its modest build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> upstate New York, between <strong>the</strong><br />

Hudson River and <strong>the</strong> Berkshire mounta<strong>in</strong>s and Massachusetts,<br />

has been home to what <strong>the</strong> website (nature<strong>in</strong>stitute.org)<br />

describes without false modesty as “<strong>in</strong>cisive and thoughtful<br />

research studies, publications, and education programs.” If<br />

physical heft and <strong>for</strong>ce of consciousness are often overbalanced<br />

toward glass and concrete <strong>in</strong> today’s universities, The<br />

Nature Institute has it <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r way around. Acutely aware<br />

of <strong>the</strong> best contemporary th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> natural and life sciences<br />

and technology, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitute’s researches seek balance. The<br />

mission statement is concise:<br />

“Nature around us is whole and <strong>in</strong>terconnected.<br />

Though we are part of nature, we do not yet fathom<br />

her depths, and our actions do not embody her<br />

wisdom. A fundamental shift <strong>in</strong> our way of view<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> world is necessary if we would contribute to<br />

nature’s unity ra<strong>the</strong>r than dissolution. At The Nature<br />

Institute, we develop new qualitative and holistic<br />

approaches to see<strong>in</strong>g and understand<strong>in</strong>g nature and<br />

technology. Through research, publications, and<br />

educational programs we work to create a new<br />

paradigm that embraces nature’s wisdom <strong>in</strong> shap<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

susta<strong>in</strong>able and healthy future.”<br />

Just <strong>the</strong> previous even<strong>in</strong>g Johannes Kühl, leader of <strong>the</strong><br />

Natural Science Section at <strong>the</strong> Goe<strong>the</strong>anum <strong>in</strong> Switzerland,<br />

had spoken to a crowd packed, sitt<strong>in</strong>g and stand<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

<strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitute’s small meet<strong>in</strong>g room. With sufficient<br />

support—$225,000 of which half has been raised,—<strong>the</strong>re<br />

will be a new w<strong>in</strong>g added with a larger meet<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

sem<strong>in</strong>ar room, and added lab and research/office rooms<br />

below. Room to grow, appropriate to a thriv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>itiative.<br />

“The Nature Institute’s methodology is <strong>in</strong>spired by<br />

<strong>in</strong>tegrative th<strong>in</strong>kers and scientists, such as Johann<br />

Wolfgang von Goe<strong>the</strong>, <strong>Rudolf</strong> Ste<strong>in</strong>er, Owen Barfield<br />

and Kurt Goldste<strong>in</strong>. We develop ways of th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

perception that <strong>in</strong>tegrate self-reflective and critical<br />

thought, imag<strong>in</strong>ation, and careful, detailed observation<br />

of nature’s phenomena. Goe<strong>the</strong>’s words stand as<br />

a motto <strong>for</strong> our ef<strong>for</strong>ts:<br />

If we want to atta<strong>in</strong> a liv<strong>in</strong>g understand<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

nature, we must become as flexible and mobile as<br />

nature herself.<br />

“Biologist and Institute founder and director Craig<br />

Holdrege, senior researcher and publications’ editor<br />

Steve Talbott, associate researcher Henrike Holdrege,<br />

and affiliate researchers Michael D’Aleo, Johannes Wirz,<br />

and Ronald Brady (deceased) have authored books and<br />

articles while also speak<strong>in</strong>g at conferences, lead<strong>in</strong>g workshops,<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g teachers, and lectur<strong>in</strong>g widely.”<br />

In a short conversation with Craig Holdrege it was<br />

possible to move quickly to core issues. His recent book with<br />

colleague Steve Talbott, Beyond Biotechnology: The Barren<br />

Promise of Genetic Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, is a great achievement, calmly<br />

tak<strong>in</strong>g up all <strong>the</strong> hype about genetic eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and gently
