The Human Be<strong>in</strong>g and<br />
Our <strong>Future</strong> Evolution<br />
Evolution, Involution and Creation Out of<br />
Noth<strong>in</strong>gness<br />
A lecture by <strong>Rudolf</strong> Ste<strong>in</strong>er, 17 June 1909, <strong>in</strong> Berl<strong>in</strong><br />
Editor’s Note: This lecture was recommended read<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> 2009-2010 <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />
Study Theme of <strong>the</strong> Year, and it was used by <strong>the</strong> general council of <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>Anthroposophical</strong> <strong>Society</strong> <strong>in</strong> America as a group study <strong>in</strong> 2010. Given <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> centenary<br />
year of <strong>the</strong> birth of Charles Darw<strong>in</strong>, it shows both <strong>Rudolf</strong> Ste<strong>in</strong>er’s appreciation<br />
of <strong>the</strong> concept of evolution as understood <strong>in</strong> natural science and his truly vast expansion<br />
of that concept to envision humanity’s emerg<strong>in</strong>g power to evolve itself and<br />
<strong>the</strong> be<strong>in</strong>gs of consciousness who are engaged with human be<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> that process. The<br />
lecture was given to members of what was <strong>the</strong>n a group of <strong>the</strong> Theosophical <strong>Society</strong>.<br />
This 1981 translation by Paul<strong>in</strong>e Wehrle as “The Be<strong>in</strong>g of Man and His <strong>Future</strong><br />
Evolution” has been adapted to current standards of “gender neutrality.” It is available<br />
from Ste<strong>in</strong>erBooks <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> USA and at Ste<strong>in</strong>erBooks.org onl<strong>in</strong>e.<br />
Today we <strong>in</strong>tend add<strong>in</strong>g someth<strong>in</strong>g to round off <strong>the</strong> many facts and views<br />
we have been study<strong>in</strong>g here this w<strong>in</strong>ter. We have often emphasized <strong>the</strong> way <strong>in</strong><br />
which spiritual science1 should take hold of human life, and how it can become<br />
life, action and deed. Today, however, we want to give a few conclud<strong>in</strong>g aspects<br />
on <strong>the</strong> subject of <strong>the</strong> great evolutionary processes of <strong>the</strong> cosmos, as <strong>the</strong>se are<br />
expressed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g. And to start with I should like to draw your<br />
attention to a fact that can tell you a great deal about <strong>the</strong> nature of cosmic<br />
evolution, if only you are prepared to look at it <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> right way.<br />
Consider, <strong>in</strong> a purely external way to beg<strong>in</strong> with, <strong>the</strong> difference between<br />
<strong>the</strong> evolution of <strong>the</strong> animal and that of <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g. You need only say<br />
one word and hold one idea be<strong>for</strong>e you, and you will soon notice <strong>the</strong> difference<br />
1 The German “Geisteswissenschaft” is rendered “spiritual science” <strong>in</strong> English anthroposophical<br />
writ<strong>in</strong>gs. In <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al it has also an association with <strong>the</strong> discipl<strong>in</strong>es known <strong>in</strong><br />
American universities as “<strong>the</strong> humanities” (<strong>in</strong> German universities, Geisteswissenschaften).<br />
Geist designates both “m<strong>in</strong>d” and “spirit” <strong>in</strong> German, and <strong>Rudolf</strong> Ste<strong>in</strong>er affirmed that <strong>in</strong><br />
pure thought we are already spiritually active. So a “spiritual science” po<strong>in</strong>ts to one part of<br />
a range of recognized human capabilities, an <strong>in</strong>tensified consciousness, <strong>in</strong> contrast with a<br />
materialistic approach to natural science which tends to deny <strong>the</strong> significance of human<br />
consciousness. —Editor
