From Creature to Creator: The Human Be<strong>in</strong>g and Our <strong>Future</strong> Evolution<br />

were to spend <strong>the</strong>ir lives without develop<strong>in</strong>g any treasures<br />

of thought, without pleasure or displeasure, nor any feel<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>for</strong> duty beyond <strong>the</strong> limits of karma — <strong>in</strong> such an age <strong>the</strong><br />

Spirits of Personality would have no nourishment and <strong>the</strong>y<br />

would become emaciated. Such is our connection with <strong>the</strong><br />

be<strong>in</strong>gs who are <strong>in</strong>visibly <strong>in</strong>terwoven with our life.<br />

As I told you, <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g adds someth<strong>in</strong>g new to<br />

development, creates as it were someth<strong>in</strong>g out of noth<strong>in</strong>gness<br />

<strong>in</strong> addition to <strong>in</strong>volution and evolution. We could not<br />

create anyth<strong>in</strong>g out of noth<strong>in</strong>gness, however, had we not<br />

previously received <strong>the</strong> causes <strong>in</strong>to which we have placed<br />

ourselves as <strong>in</strong> a vehicle. This vehicle was given us dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> Saturn evolution, and bit by bit we are discard<strong>in</strong>g it and<br />

develop<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> future. We had to receive <strong>the</strong> foundation<br />

<strong>for</strong> this, however, and if <strong>the</strong> gods had not provided<br />

this foundation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first place, we would not have been<br />

able to per<strong>for</strong>m any action that can be created out of noth<strong>in</strong>gness.<br />

That relationships <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> surround<strong>in</strong>g world affect<br />

us <strong>in</strong> such a way that <strong>the</strong>y really help our fur<strong>the</strong>r development<br />

is due to this lay<strong>in</strong>g of a good foundation.<br />

For what has become possible through <strong>the</strong> fact that <strong>the</strong><br />

human be<strong>in</strong>g can create someth<strong>in</strong>g new out of relationships,<br />

and that we can make use of <strong>the</strong> connections <strong>in</strong>to which we<br />

are placed so as to <strong>for</strong>m <strong>the</strong> foundation <strong>for</strong> someth<strong>in</strong>g new<br />

that we ourselves create? And what does it mean that <strong>the</strong><br />

human be<strong>in</strong>g has become capable of extend<strong>in</strong>g thoughts beyond<br />

<strong>the</strong> th<strong>in</strong>gs we experiences <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> surround<strong>in</strong>g world,<br />

and feel<strong>in</strong>g more than what is objectively <strong>the</strong>re <strong>in</strong> front of<br />

us? What has come about as a result of <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g able to work beyond <strong>the</strong> dictates of karma, and live<br />

<strong>in</strong> duty towards truth, fairness and k<strong>in</strong>dness of heart?<br />

By becom<strong>in</strong>g capable of logical th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g, of develop<strong>in</strong>g<br />

thought <strong>in</strong> accordance with its necessity, <strong>the</strong> possibility<br />

of error has been created. Because of <strong>the</strong> pleasure <strong>the</strong><br />

human be<strong>in</strong>g can take <strong>in</strong> what is beautiful, <strong>the</strong> possibility<br />

76 • be<strong>in</strong>g human<br />

has also been created <strong>for</strong> <strong>in</strong>troduc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> element of ugl<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

and impurity <strong>in</strong>to world evolution. Because <strong>the</strong><br />

human be<strong>in</strong>g is capable of both sett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong>th <strong>the</strong> concept<br />

of duty and of fulfill<strong>in</strong>g it beyond <strong>the</strong> extent of karma, <strong>the</strong><br />

possibility of evil and of resistance to duty has been created.<br />

So it is this very possibility of be<strong>in</strong>g able to create<br />

solely out of relationships—a possibility that has placed<br />

<strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a world <strong>in</strong> which we can also work on<br />

our own spiritual part,—that allows it to become full of<br />

error, ugl<strong>in</strong>ess and evil. And not only had <strong>the</strong> possibility<br />

to be provided <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g to create out of <strong>the</strong>se<br />

relationships, but <strong>the</strong> possibility had to be given <strong>for</strong> us by<br />

d<strong>in</strong>t of struggle and striv<strong>in</strong>g gradually to create out of <strong>the</strong>se<br />

relationships what is right, what is beautiful and those<br />

virtues that really fur<strong>the</strong>r our evolution.<br />

Creat<strong>in</strong>g out of relationships is called <strong>in</strong> Christian esotericism<br />

‘creat<strong>in</strong>g out of <strong>the</strong> spirit.’ And creat<strong>in</strong>g out of<br />

right, beautiful and virtuous relationships is called <strong>in</strong><br />

Christian esotericism ‘The Holy Spirit.’ When <strong>the</strong> human<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g is able to create out of noth<strong>in</strong>gness <strong>the</strong> right or true,<br />

<strong>the</strong> beautiful and <strong>the</strong> good, <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit fills us with<br />

bliss. But <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g to be able to create <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

sense of <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit, we had first to be given <strong>the</strong> foundation,<br />

as is <strong>the</strong> case <strong>for</strong> all creation out of noth<strong>in</strong>gness.<br />

This foundation was given us through <strong>the</strong> com<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

Christ <strong>in</strong>to our evolution. Through experienc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

Christ Event on earth, <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g was able to ascend<br />

to creat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit. Thus it is Christ Himself<br />

Who creates <strong>the</strong> greatest, most profound foundation. If<br />

<strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g becomes such that he stands firmly on<br />

<strong>the</strong> basis of <strong>the</strong> Christ experience, and <strong>the</strong> Christ experience<br />

is <strong>the</strong> carriage he jo<strong>in</strong>s <strong>for</strong> his evolutionary progress,<br />

<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> Christ sends him <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit, and <strong>the</strong> human<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g becomes capable of creat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> right, beautiful and<br />

good <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> course of his fur<strong>the</strong>r evolution. 7<br />

7 Several years be<strong>for</strong>e this lecture was given, <strong>Rudolf</strong> Ste<strong>in</strong>er had accepted an <strong>in</strong>vitation from <strong>the</strong> Theosophical <strong>Society</strong> to serve as its leader<br />

<strong>in</strong> central Europe. Theosophical <strong>in</strong>sights as developed by Helena Blavatsky and Col. Olcott, who founded <strong>the</strong> society <strong>in</strong> New York <strong>in</strong><br />

1875, had drawn on eastern traditions, primarily H<strong>in</strong>du and Buddhist, to support conscious <strong>in</strong>quiry <strong>in</strong>to spiritual realities. By 1909,<br />

however, <strong>the</strong> current leadership had begun to make representations about <strong>the</strong> events beh<strong>in</strong>d Christian tradition which <strong>Rudolf</strong> Ste<strong>in</strong>er’s<br />

research showed to be <strong>in</strong>accurate. So at this time he had begun to communicate his <strong>in</strong>sights <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> evolutionary role of <strong>the</strong> spiritual<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g known <strong>in</strong> Christianity as <strong>the</strong> Christ. This difference among o<strong>the</strong>rs led to <strong>the</strong> separate found<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Anthroposophical</strong> <strong>Society</strong> a<br />

few years later. —Editor
