life between birth and death. And if she were not able to<br />

take anyth<strong>in</strong>g with her, she would be at exactly <strong>the</strong> same<br />

stage <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g life as <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> previous one. Through<br />

<strong>the</strong> fact that you see <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g go<strong>in</strong>g through a development<br />

<strong>in</strong> life, and acquir<strong>in</strong>g what <strong>the</strong> animal cannot acquire,<br />

because <strong>the</strong> animal’s possibilities of development do<br />

not go beyond its <strong>in</strong>born capacities, <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g is constantly<br />

enrich<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> ego, and reach<strong>in</strong>g higher levels from<br />

one <strong>in</strong>carnation to ano<strong>the</strong>r. It is because <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

bears an ego that has already been at work with<strong>in</strong> him, although<br />

it only becomes free at <strong>the</strong> twenty-first year, that education<br />

is practicable, and someth<strong>in</strong>g fur<strong>the</strong>r can be done<br />

with him beyond his orig<strong>in</strong>al possibilities. The lion br<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

its lion nature with it and lives it out. The human be<strong>in</strong>g not<br />

only br<strong>in</strong>gs along his nature as a member of <strong>the</strong> general<br />

human species, but also what has been atta<strong>in</strong>ed as an ego <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> previous <strong>in</strong>carnation. This can be trans<strong>for</strong>med more and<br />

more by education and life, and it will have acquired new<br />

impetus by <strong>the</strong> time <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g passes through <strong>the</strong><br />

portal of death and has to prepare <strong>for</strong> a new <strong>in</strong>carnation.<br />

The po<strong>in</strong>t is that <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g acquires new factors of<br />

development and is constantly add<strong>in</strong>g to her store.<br />

Now let us ask what actually happens when <strong>the</strong> human<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g adds to her store from outside? To answer this we must<br />

reach three very important, ra<strong>the</strong>r difficult concepts. But as<br />

we have been work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> some years <strong>in</strong> this group, we ought<br />

to be able to understand <strong>the</strong>m. Let us start by tak<strong>in</strong>g a fully<br />

developed plant, <strong>for</strong> <strong>in</strong>stance a lily of <strong>the</strong> valley. Here you<br />

have <strong>the</strong> plant be<strong>for</strong>e you <strong>in</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r <strong>for</strong>m, as a small seed.<br />

Imag<strong>in</strong>e hold<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> seed; <strong>the</strong>re you have a m<strong>in</strong>ute structure.<br />

When you lay it <strong>in</strong> front of you, you can say:<br />

Everyth<strong>in</strong>g that I shall see later on as root, stalk, leaves<br />

and blossom is <strong>in</strong> this seed. So here I have <strong>the</strong> plant <strong>in</strong><br />

front of me as a seed and <strong>the</strong>re as a fully grown plant.<br />

But I could not have <strong>the</strong> seed <strong>in</strong> front of me if it had<br />

not been produced by a previous lily of <strong>the</strong> valley.<br />

The case is different <strong>for</strong> clairvoyant consciousness.<br />

When clairvoyant consciousness observes <strong>the</strong> fully grown<br />

lily of <strong>the</strong> valley, it sees <strong>the</strong> physical plant filled with an<br />

e<strong>the</strong>ric body, a body consist<strong>in</strong>g of streams of light permeat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

it from top to bottom. In <strong>the</strong> lily of <strong>the</strong> valley, however,<br />

<strong>the</strong> e<strong>the</strong>ric body does not extend very far beyond <strong>the</strong><br />

physical body of <strong>the</strong> plant and does not differ from it very<br />

much. But if you take <strong>the</strong> small seed of <strong>the</strong> lily of <strong>the</strong> valley<br />

you will f<strong>in</strong>d that although <strong>the</strong> physical seed is small it is<br />

permeated by a wonderfully beautiful e<strong>the</strong>ric body ray<strong>in</strong>g<br />

out all round <strong>in</strong> such a way that <strong>the</strong> seed is situated at one<br />

end of <strong>the</strong> e<strong>the</strong>ric body like a comet with a tail. The physical<br />

seed is really only a denser po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> light or e<strong>the</strong>ric body<br />

of <strong>the</strong> lily of <strong>the</strong> valley. When a spiritual scientist has <strong>the</strong><br />

fully grown lily of <strong>the</strong> valley <strong>in</strong> front of him <strong>the</strong>n, <strong>for</strong> him,<br />

<strong>the</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g that was hidden to beg<strong>in</strong> with is developed. When<br />

he has <strong>the</strong> seed <strong>in</strong> front of him where <strong>the</strong> physical part is<br />

very small and only <strong>the</strong> spiritual part is large, he says: <strong>the</strong><br />

actual be<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> lily of <strong>the</strong> valley is rolled up <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> physical<br />

seed. So when we look at <strong>the</strong> lily of <strong>the</strong> valley we have<br />

to dist<strong>in</strong>guish two different states. One state is where <strong>the</strong><br />

whole be<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> lily of <strong>the</strong> valley is <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>volution: <strong>the</strong> seed<br />

conta<strong>in</strong>s <strong>the</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g rolled up, <strong>in</strong>volved. When it comes <strong>for</strong>th<br />

it passes over to evolution, and <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> whole be<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong><br />

lily of <strong>the</strong> valley slips more <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> newly develop<strong>in</strong>g seed.<br />

Thus evolution and <strong>in</strong>volution alternate <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> successive<br />

states of a plant. Dur<strong>in</strong>g evolution <strong>the</strong> spiritual disappears<br />

fur<strong>the</strong>r and fur<strong>the</strong>r and <strong>the</strong> physical grows great, whilst <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>volution <strong>the</strong> physical will disappear fur<strong>the</strong>r and fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

and <strong>the</strong> spiritual become greater and greater.<br />

In a certa<strong>in</strong> respect we can speak of evolution and <strong>in</strong>volution<br />

alternat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g to an even greater<br />

extent. In <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g between birth and death a<br />

physical body and an e<strong>the</strong>ric body <strong>in</strong>terpenetrate to <strong>for</strong>m<br />

<strong>the</strong> physical, and <strong>the</strong> spiritual <strong>in</strong>terpenetrates <strong>the</strong>m too <strong>in</strong><br />

a certa<strong>in</strong> way. As an earthly be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g is <strong>in</strong><br />

evolution. But when <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g is seen clairvoyantly<br />

pass<strong>in</strong>g through <strong>the</strong> portal of death, she does not leave beh<strong>in</strong>d<br />

<strong>in</strong> physical life as much as <strong>the</strong> lily of <strong>the</strong> valley leaves<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> seed; <strong>the</strong> physical disappears so completely that you<br />

no longer see it, it is all rolled up <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> spiritual. Then <strong>the</strong><br />

human be<strong>in</strong>g passes through Devachan, where she is <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>volution<br />

as regards her earthly be<strong>in</strong>g. For this earthly be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g, evolution is between birth and death,<br />

<strong>in</strong>volution between death and a new birth. Yet <strong>the</strong>re is a<br />

tremendous difference between <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>the</strong><br />

plant. In <strong>the</strong> plant we can speak of <strong>in</strong>volution and evolution,<br />

but <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> case of <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g we have to speak<br />
