etween <strong>the</strong> concept of animal and human evolution.<br />

Th<strong>in</strong>k of <strong>the</strong> word ‘education.’ Actual education is impossible<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> animal world. To a certa<strong>in</strong> extent you can tra<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> animal to do th<strong>in</strong>gs that are <strong>for</strong>eign to its natural<br />

<strong>in</strong>st<strong>in</strong>cts and <strong>in</strong>born way of life. But only an extremely enthusiastic<br />

dog-lover would want to deny that <strong>the</strong>re is a radical<br />

difference between <strong>the</strong> education of a human be<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

what can be undertaken with animals. We need merely bear<br />

one particular anthroposophical <strong>in</strong>sight <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d, and we<br />

shall understand <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>for</strong> this apparently superficial fact.<br />

We know that <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g’s development is a<br />

gradual and very complicated process. We have repeatedly<br />

emphasized that <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first seven years of life, up to <strong>the</strong><br />

change of teeth, <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g develops <strong>in</strong> quite a different<br />

way from <strong>the</strong> later period up to fourteen, and aga<strong>in</strong><br />

from <strong>the</strong> fourteenth to <strong>the</strong> twenty-first year. We will only<br />

touch on this today, <strong>for</strong> you already know it. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

spiritual science <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g passes through several<br />

births. It is born <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> physical world when it leaves its<br />

mo<strong>the</strong>r’s body and is freed of <strong>the</strong> physical maternal sheath.<br />

But we know that when this has happened <strong>the</strong> child is still<br />

enclosed <strong>in</strong> a second maternal sheath, an e<strong>the</strong>ric2 one. Dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> first seven years of life <strong>the</strong> child’s e<strong>the</strong>ric body is<br />

completely enveloped <strong>in</strong> external e<strong>the</strong>ric currents that<br />

come from <strong>the</strong> outer world, just as <strong>the</strong> physical body is enveloped<br />

until birth <strong>in</strong> a physical maternal sheath. At <strong>the</strong><br />

change of teeth this e<strong>the</strong>ric sheath is stripped off, and not<br />

until now, at <strong>the</strong> age of seven, is <strong>the</strong> e<strong>the</strong>ric body born.<br />

Then <strong>the</strong> astral body is still enclosed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> astral maternal<br />

sheath that is stripped off at puberty. After this <strong>the</strong> astral<br />

body develops freely until <strong>the</strong> twenty-first or twenty-second<br />

year, which is <strong>the</strong> time when strictly speak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> actual<br />

ego of <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g is born. Not until <strong>the</strong>n does<br />

<strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g awaken to full <strong>in</strong>ner <strong>in</strong>tensity, and <strong>the</strong><br />

ego that has evolved through <strong>the</strong> course of earlier <strong>in</strong>carnations<br />

<strong>the</strong>n works its way free.<br />

To clairvoyant consciousness a very special fact be-<br />

comes apparent here. If you watch a very young child <strong>for</strong><br />

several weeks or months, you will see <strong>the</strong> child’s head surrounded<br />

by e<strong>the</strong>ric and astral3 currents and <strong>for</strong>ces. However,<br />

<strong>the</strong>se currents and <strong>for</strong>ces gradually become less<br />

dist<strong>in</strong>ct and vanish after a while. What is really tak<strong>in</strong>g place<br />

<strong>the</strong>re? You can actually discover what is happen<strong>in</strong>g, even<br />

without clairvoyant vision, although clairvoyant vision<br />

confirms what we are about to say. Immediately after <strong>the</strong><br />

birth of a human be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> bra<strong>in</strong> is not <strong>the</strong> same as it will<br />

be a few weeks or months later. The child already perceives<br />

<strong>the</strong> outer world, of course, but its bra<strong>in</strong> is not yet an <strong>in</strong>strument<br />

capable of connect<strong>in</strong>g external impressions <strong>in</strong> a<br />

def<strong>in</strong>ite way. By means of connect<strong>in</strong>g-nerves runn<strong>in</strong>g from<br />

one part of <strong>the</strong> bra<strong>in</strong> to ano<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g learns<br />

by degrees to l<strong>in</strong>k toge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> thought what is perceived <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> external world, but <strong>the</strong>se connect<strong>in</strong>g nerve-strands develop<br />

only after birth. A child will hear and see a bell, <strong>for</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>stance, but <strong>the</strong> impression of <strong>the</strong> sound and <strong>the</strong> sight of<br />

<strong>the</strong> bell do not immediately comb<strong>in</strong>e to <strong>for</strong>m <strong>the</strong> thought<br />

that <strong>the</strong> bell is r<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g. The child learns this only gradually,<br />

because <strong>the</strong> part of <strong>the</strong> bra<strong>in</strong> that is <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>strument <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

perception of sound and <strong>the</strong> part that is <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>strument <strong>for</strong><br />

visual perception become connected only <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> course of<br />

life. And not until this has happened is it possible <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

child to reach <strong>the</strong> conclusion: ‘What I see is <strong>the</strong> same th<strong>in</strong>g<br />

that is mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> sound.’ Connect<strong>in</strong>g-cords like this are<br />

developed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> bra<strong>in</strong>, and <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>ces that develop <strong>the</strong>se<br />

connect<strong>in</strong>g-cords can be seen by <strong>the</strong> clairvoyant <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first<br />

weeks of <strong>the</strong> child’s development as an extra cover<strong>in</strong>g<br />

round <strong>the</strong> bra<strong>in</strong>. But this cover<strong>in</strong>g passes <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> bra<strong>in</strong><br />

and subsequently lives with<strong>in</strong> it, no longer work<strong>in</strong>g from<br />

outside but from with<strong>in</strong>. What works from outside dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> first weeks of <strong>the</strong> child’s development could not go on<br />

work<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> whole development of <strong>the</strong> grow<strong>in</strong>g human<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g were it not protected by <strong>the</strong> various sheaths. For<br />

when that which has been work<strong>in</strong>g from outside passes<br />

<strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> bra<strong>in</strong>, it develops under <strong>the</strong> protect<strong>in</strong>g sheath first<br />

2 <strong>Rudolf</strong> Ste<strong>in</strong>er uses <strong>the</strong> term “e<strong>the</strong>ric” to <strong>in</strong>dicate <strong>the</strong> time-based <strong>for</strong>ces <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> <strong>for</strong>mative processes. Such <strong>for</strong>ces are obvious when<br />

contemplat<strong>in</strong>g first a crystal or o<strong>the</strong>r lifeless physical object, and <strong>the</strong>n a plant or o<strong>the</strong>r liv<strong>in</strong>g organism. Elsewhere <strong>in</strong> this issue Steve<br />

Talbott addresses this dist<strong>in</strong>ction <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> language of contemporary biology (“The Language of Organism”). —Editor<br />

3 Parallel with <strong>the</strong> term “e<strong>the</strong>ric,” “astral” po<strong>in</strong>ts to <strong>the</strong> characteristic differences <strong>in</strong> activity and capacity observable between plants and<br />

animals. —Editor<br />
