someth<strong>in</strong>g karmic. But suppose you only know someth<strong>in</strong>g<br />
about <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ft and not <strong>the</strong> thief—<strong>the</strong>re<strong>for</strong>e <strong>the</strong>re is a<br />
particular person <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> objective world who has done <strong>the</strong><br />
steal<strong>in</strong>g, but about whom you know noth<strong>in</strong>g. The thief is<br />
not go<strong>in</strong>g to come to you, though, and say: ‘Lock me up, I<br />
have committed a <strong>the</strong>ft’, on <strong>the</strong> contrary, it is up to you to<br />
l<strong>in</strong>e up <strong>the</strong> facts so as to produce <strong>the</strong> evidence as to who is<br />
<strong>the</strong> thief. The ideas you put toge<strong>the</strong>r have noth<strong>in</strong>g to do<br />
with <strong>the</strong> objective facts. They depend on quite different<br />
th<strong>in</strong>gs, even on whe<strong>the</strong>r you are clever or not. Your tra<strong>in</strong> of<br />
argument does not make <strong>the</strong> person a thief, it is a process<br />
tak<strong>in</strong>g place entirely with<strong>in</strong> you that gets associated with<br />
what is <strong>the</strong>re outside. Strictly speak<strong>in</strong>g, any k<strong>in</strong>d of logic is<br />
someth<strong>in</strong>g added to th<strong>in</strong>gs from outside. And all op<strong>in</strong>ions<br />
of taste, as well as judgments we make about beauty, are<br />
additions. Thus <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g is constantly enrich<strong>in</strong>g life<br />
with th<strong>in</strong>gs that are not determ<strong>in</strong>ed by previous causes, but<br />
which we experience by br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g ourselves <strong>in</strong>to a relationship<br />
with th<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
If we make a rapid survey of human life and visualize<br />
<strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g’s development through ancient Saturn,<br />
Sun and Moon as far as our Earth evolution, 5 we f<strong>in</strong>d that<br />
on Saturn <strong>the</strong>re could be no question of <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g<br />
be<strong>in</strong>g able to relate to th<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> this way. Everyth<strong>in</strong>g was<br />
pure necessity <strong>the</strong>n. It was <strong>the</strong> same on old Sun and also on<br />
old Moon, and <strong>the</strong> animals are still <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> situation today<br />
that <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g was <strong>in</strong> on <strong>the</strong> Moon. The animal<br />
experiences only what is determ<strong>in</strong>ed by preced<strong>in</strong>g causes.<br />
The human be<strong>in</strong>g alone has entirely new experiences,<br />
<strong>in</strong>dependent of previous causes. There<strong>for</strong>e <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> truest<br />
sense of <strong>the</strong> word <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g alone is capable of<br />
education; <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g alone can cont<strong>in</strong>ually add<br />
someth<strong>in</strong>g new to what is determ<strong>in</strong>ed by karma. Only on<br />
Earth did <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g atta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> possibility of add<strong>in</strong>g<br />
someth<strong>in</strong>g new. On <strong>the</strong> Moon our development had not<br />
reached <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t where we would have been capable of<br />
add<strong>in</strong>g anyth<strong>in</strong>g new to our <strong>in</strong>nate capacities. Although<br />
not an animal, we were <strong>the</strong>n at <strong>the</strong> stage of animal<br />
development. Our actions were determ<strong>in</strong>ed by external<br />
causes. To a certa<strong>in</strong> extent this is still so today, <strong>for</strong> those<br />
experiences that are free experiences are only slowly mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir way <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g. And <strong>the</strong>y appear to a<br />
greater and greater extent <strong>the</strong> higher <strong>the</strong> level at which <strong>the</strong><br />
human be<strong>in</strong>g is. Imag<strong>in</strong>e a dog stand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> front of a<br />
Raphael pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g. It would see what is <strong>the</strong>re <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> picture<br />
itself, <strong>in</strong> so far as it is a sense object. But if a human be<strong>in</strong>g<br />
were to stand <strong>in</strong> front of <strong>the</strong> picture, she would see someth<strong>in</strong>g<br />
quite different <strong>in</strong> it; she would see what she is capable<br />
of creat<strong>in</strong>g through <strong>the</strong> fact that she has already developed<br />
fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> previous <strong>in</strong>carnations. And now imag<strong>in</strong>e a genius<br />
like Goe<strong>the</strong>; he would see even more, and he would know<br />
<strong>the</strong> significance of why one th<strong>in</strong>g is pa<strong>in</strong>ted like this and<br />
<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r like that. The more highly developed a human<br />
be<strong>in</strong>g is, <strong>the</strong> more she sees. And <strong>the</strong> more she has enriched<br />
her soul <strong>the</strong> greater her capacity to add to it <strong>the</strong> soul<br />
experiences from soul relationships. These become <strong>the</strong><br />
property of her soul and are stored up with<strong>in</strong> it. All this,<br />
however, has only been possible <strong>for</strong> humanity s<strong>in</strong>ce Earth<br />
evolution began. But now <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g will take place.<br />
The human be<strong>in</strong>g will develop <strong>in</strong> its own way through<br />
<strong>the</strong> subsequent ages. We know that <strong>the</strong> Earth will be succeeded<br />
by Jupiter, Venus and Vulcan. Dur<strong>in</strong>g this evolution<br />
<strong>the</strong> sum of <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g’s experiences over and above<br />
those result<strong>in</strong>g from previous causes will become greater<br />
and greater, and our <strong>in</strong>ner be<strong>in</strong>g become richer and richer.<br />
What we have brought with us from ancient causes, from<br />
<strong>the</strong> Saturn, Sun and Moon stages, will have less and less<br />
significance. We are develop<strong>in</strong>g our way out of previous<br />
causes and cast<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m off. And when, toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong><br />
Earth, <strong>the</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g will have reached Vulcan, we will<br />
have stripped off all we received dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Saturn, Sun<br />
and Moon evolution. We will have cast it all off.<br />
Now we come to a difficult concept which shall be<br />
made clear by an analogy. Imag<strong>in</strong>e you are sitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a<br />
carriage that has been given or bequea<strong>the</strong>d to you. You are<br />
tak<strong>in</strong>g a ride <strong>in</strong> this carriage when a wheel becomes faulty, so<br />
