and a hammam to steam your cares away.
Food of love
If food and drink is the way to your partner’s heart,
you’re spoilt for choice. As is to be expected from
a country famed for its chocolate, there’s no shortage
of chocolatiers in the capital. But for something out of
the ordinary, sample the Asian-accented delights at
Laurent Gerbaud (2d Rue Ravenstein), where you can
sip hot chocolate served with a complimentary treat.
For drinks for two, absorb the atmosphere at Le
Cirio (18 Rue de la Bourse), which has been around for
more than a century. The house aperitif, half-en-half, is
a combination of white and sparkling wines. Or head
off the beaten path to Brasserie Cochaux (2 Avenue
Gustave Latinis, tel. +32 (0)2 248 2802), exuding oldworld
charm from its art nouveau dining room. Enjoy
a glass of champagne and no-frills Belgian comfort food
before taking a stroll in nearby Josaphat Park.
With mussels season in full swing (traditionally,
these molluscs are eaten only when there is a letter ‘r’
in the month), it would be a big mistake to miss out on
this famous Belgian treat. The down-home Chez Léon
(18 Rue des Bouchers, tel. +32 (0)2 511 1415, chezleon.be)
cooks mussels 14 different ways, all served with
crisp golden frites.
For something more upmarket, impress your other
half with the tasting menu at Alexandre (164 Rue
Midi, tel. +32 (0)2 502 4055, alexandre-restaurant.be);
Brussels’ newest dining hot spot, it won a Michelin

star last November, only five months after opening.
Chef-owner Alexandre Dionisio, who gained fame as
a finalist on France’s Top Chef television show, likes to
experiment with seasonal flavours and textures, from
soy-marinated salmon to chicken oysters in gravy.

cuisine. A Brussels institution since 1926, it remains
unpretentious and intimate. Halfway through the meal,
waiters often bring extra servings of gravy in copper
pots to the table, treating every diner like a special
guest. Indulge in the elaborate art nouveau-style dining
room, or book a table in the kitchen for front-row
viewing of Lionel Rigolet and his team.
Wedding bells
Finally, if you’re looking for a special place to propose
to a loved one, what setting could be more memorable
than Brussels’ famous Atomium (Square de l’Atomium,
atomium.be), built for the 1958 World’s Fair and
renovated in 2006. Whether you pop the question
below, or within the nine-orbed silvery structure
itself, you’re sure to score points for originality. The
restaurant in the top sphere (tel. +32 (0)2 479 5850),
which serves Belgian surf-and-turf specialities,
offers fantastic views and feels almost otherworldly.
Then you can do your diamond shopping in
Antwerp – an easy trip from Brussels – and plan
your honeymoon in beautiful Bruges, famous for
its canals and medieval architecture…

Laat de romance ontluiken in het elegante Le Dixseptième
(Magdalenasteenweg 25, ledixseptieme.be), een luxueus
17e-eeuws herenhuis op loopafstand van de Grote Markt. Of
in hotel Manos Premier (Charleroise Steenweg 100-106,
manospremier.com), een oase van rust in de buurt van de
Louizalaan, met een deugddoend kuuroord. Uw budget is
beperkt, maar u boet liever niet aan comfort in? Ga dan naar
hotel Bloom (Koningsstraat 250, hotelbloom.com).
Aan groene ruimtes is er in Brussel ook geen gebrek voor
wie van romantische wandelingen houdt: de Kleine
Zavelsquare met zijn fontein en standbeelden ademt sfeer uit
en het uitgestrekte Ter Kamerenbos heeft zelfs een heus
eiland. Voor een stadswandeling is Sint-Gillis een aanrader,
met zijn huizen in art-nouveaustijl en op elke hoek een café.
Als u het hart van uw partner wil veroveren met lekker eten,
dan hebt u in Brussel duizend-en-een mogelijkheden. Om de
overheerlijke Brusselse chocolade te proeven moet u bij
Laurent Gerbaud zijn (Ravensteinstraat 2D). Om gezellig een
glaasje te drinken kunt u de sfeer gaan snuiven in Le Cirio
(Beursstraat 18). Mosselen zijn een absolute must en Chez

ze op 14 verschillende manieren bereid, met friet natuurlijk.
Voor een klasse hoger zijn het degustatiemenu bij Alexandre

512 2921) niet te versmaden.
