* GUIDES Monrovia Fashion forward When The New York Times called Korto Momolu “a fashion designer to watch,” it sparked an interest in the edgy jewellery and clothing being produced by Liberian designers living in the United States and Europe. Momolu (kortomomolu.com), who went to high-school in Liberia, has since shot to stardom on the reality TV show Project Runway, and should inspire you to check out the fashions being produced on Liberian soil. Start with up-andcoming Robertsport-based jewellery designer Lovetta Conto (akawelle.com), before visiting Monrovia-based Tina Kpan, who runs the city’s KaSaWa fashion house and has designed for Love Martor and House of Leevean. Fishy business With 360 miles of golden coastline, Liberia has plenty of fresh fish to offer; you might even spot fishermen hauling giant tuna on to Monrovia’s beaches. The Golden Beach restaurant (Sinkor, next to the UNMIL headquarters) serves cassava fish to order, while the Barracuda Bar at the Mamba Point Hotel (Sekou Toure Avenue, tel. (0)5 764764, mambapointhotel.biz) sometimes includes Liberian fish alongside imported specialities on its excellent sushi menu. For shopping, ‘Vendors’ Row’ (behind the American Embassy) is the place to go if you’re interested in haggling for traditional Liberian masks. Replica masks from the secret Sande and Poro societies are available to buy, as are arts and crafts from all over West Africa. Traditionally, only men wear the masks, which are blessed with different qualities and powers. Way to go Robertsfi eld International Airport is 58km east of Monrovia. Payment in US dollars of $40 (€30) is expected for the 990 90-minute 90-minute taxi ride into town. Arranging a pick-up in advance is recommended, particularly at night – your hotel should be able to suggest a reliable driver.
