The <strong>com</strong>pelling month of football that was<br />
the 2002 <strong>FIFA</strong> World Cup Korea/Japan – the<br />
world’s largest sporting event – drew to a<br />
close on 30 June in Yokohama. With exciting<br />
matches played in a total of 20 stadia spread<br />
out across the two co-host nations and the<br />
enthusiastic cheers of supporters echoing<br />
around the world, Korea and Japan experienced<br />
unprecedented levels of excitement.<br />
At the start of the 21st century, in the first<br />
<strong>FIFA</strong> World Cup to be held in Asia, Brazil<br />
captured their fifth title, triumphing over Germany<br />
in the final after successfully negotiating<br />
some tough hurdles in earlier rounds. Victory<br />
allowed Brazil to reassert their authority as<br />
the world’s greatest footballing nation. This<br />
tournament was especially memorable for the<br />
exploits of rising powers such as Senegal and<br />
Turkey, who introduced fans to a new style of<br />
football <strong>com</strong>bining high physical ability, outstanding<br />
skill, and polished teamwork. After<br />
the stark reality of 1998 champions France<br />
and South American giants Argentina being<br />
eliminated in the first round, the co-hosts<br />
were jubilant that both Korea and Japan<br />
cleared the first round of the <strong>com</strong>petition of<br />
this prestigious tournament, with results that<br />
confirmed the steady rise of Asian football.<br />
As one of the co-host countries, we were<br />
especially delighted by the excellent progress<br />
of the Korean national team, as they reached<br />
the last four after defeating European heavyweights<br />
Portugal, Italy and Spain.<br />
The preparations for the 2002 <strong>FIFA</strong> World<br />
Cup Korea/Japan presented the organising<br />
<strong>com</strong>mittees of both countries with new challenges<br />
and a series of difficulties that had to<br />
be over<strong>com</strong>e. Nevertheless, I would like to<br />
stress that this historic tournament was ultimately<br />
a great success, thanks to the passion<br />
of all the people involved in the event and a<br />
solid partnership established over time.<br />
May I take this opportunity to express<br />
my deepest gratitude to all the teams that<br />
participated in the 2002 <strong>FIFA</strong> World Cup<br />
Korea/Japan, <strong>FIFA</strong>, KOWOC and all the other<br />
parties involved. I have no doubt that this<br />
report by the Technical Study Group members<br />
will make a very valuable contribution to the<br />
further development of football.<br />
Le 30 juin, à Yokohama, la finale de la Coupe<br />
du Monde de la <strong>FIFA</strong>, Corée/Japon 2002 a<br />
mis fin au plus grand événement sportif du<br />
monde, un mois de matches de football palpitants<br />
disputés dans 20 stades répartis entre<br />
les deux pays organisateurs, où l’euphorie qui<br />
s’était emparée des supporters du monde<br />
entier était à son <strong>com</strong>ble.<br />
A l’issue de cette première édition du 21e<br />
siècle, également la première à se dérouler en<br />
Asie, le Brésil a décroché son cinquième titre<br />
de champion du monde en triomphant de l’Allemagne<br />
après avoir surmonté les obstacles<br />
des tours précédents. Ce faisant, il a rétabli<br />
son autorité de première nation de football<br />
du monde. Cette édition de la Coupe du<br />
Monde restera notamment dans les annales<br />
du football en raison des exploits réalisés par<br />
les nations où ce sport est en développement<br />
telles que le Sénégal et la Turquie, qui ont<br />
inauguré un nouveau style de jeu alliant une<br />
excellente condition physique, de brillantes<br />
<strong>com</strong>pétences et un travail d’équipe bien<br />
rodé. Après l’élimination de géants tels que<br />
la France tenante du titre et l’Argentine dès le<br />
premier tour, les co-organisateurs exultaient<br />
de voir leurs équipes respectives qualifiées<br />
pour les huitièmes de finale avec des résultats<br />
confirmant l’ascension continue du football<br />
asiatique. En qualité de co-organisateur,<br />
nous avons été particulièrement heureux des<br />
formidables progrès de l’équipe nationale<br />
coréenne, demi-finaliste après ses victoires<br />
sur des sélections aussi prestigieuses que le<br />
Portugal, l’Italie et l’Espagne.<br />
La préparation de la <strong>com</strong>pétition avait<br />
placé les <strong>com</strong>ités organisateurs des deux pays<br />
devant de grands défis. Néanmoins, je tiens à<br />
souligner que la passion de tous les protagonistes<br />
et le solide partenariat établi au fil du<br />
temps ont largement contribué au brillant<br />
succès de cette <strong>com</strong>pétition historique.<br />
Aussi ai-je le plaisir d’exprimer ma plus<br />
profonde gratitude à toutes les équipes qui<br />
ont participé à Corée/Japon 2002, à la <strong>FIFA</strong>,<br />
au KOWOC et à tous leurs autres partenaires.<br />
Je suis convaincu que ce rapport du Groupe<br />
d’Etude Technique contribuera durablement<br />
au développement du football.
