for the 2002 <strong>FIFA</strong> World Cup<br />
Korea/Japan<br />
The world famous Swedish group ABBA sang<br />
the poignant words: “The winner takes it<br />
all”. This suggests that there can only be<br />
one winner, and, of course, being <strong>FIFA</strong> World<br />
Champion is an exclusive label, only available<br />
for renewal once every four years. However,<br />
our experience of Korea/Japan 2002 suggests<br />
that there were many “winners” during football’s<br />
greatest festival.<br />
In football, teamwork is the key to success,<br />
and the co-operative efforts of the co-hosts,<br />
Korea and Japan, produced remarkable<br />
results. Their joint efforts made sure that the<br />
first <strong>FIFA</strong> World Cup to be played on the continent<br />
of Asia was held in a wonderful environment,<br />
for players and fans alike. Twenty<br />
state-of-the-art stadiums, including excellent<br />
playing surfaces, provided the perfect setting<br />
for football’s premier <strong>com</strong>petition.<br />
Facilities are important, but it is the people<br />
who bring an event to life, on and off the pitch.<br />
The people of Korea and Japan were friendly,<br />
kind, attentive, and widely enthusiastic in<br />
their support for the teams and their fans –<br />
our hosts were winners in every sense. It was<br />
overwhelming to experience the atmosphere<br />
at matches involving Korea and Japan, and<br />
the celebrations which greeted the success<br />
of both teams must have given football in<br />
the region a massive boost, and this can only<br />
be good for the game on a worldwide basis.<br />
Our pre-tournament hopes for this co-hosted<br />
event were more than realised: Eastern promise<br />
indeed became Eastern reality.<br />
The 2002 <strong>FIFA</strong> World Cup was also a victory<br />
for football, with many thrilling matches,<br />
and some outstanding performances by<br />
individual players and teams. From the opening<br />
match, when Senegal shocked everyone<br />
by beating the reigning champions, France,<br />
surprises became a regular feature of the<br />
<strong>com</strong>petition.<br />
In football, triumph and success can be<br />
relative to your status or to your particular<br />
role. Everyone wants to be the champion, but<br />
for some reaching the second round can be<br />
a victory, while being the perfect host can be<br />
a rewarding experience. In Korea/Japan, there<br />
were many winners (including administrators,<br />
sports writers, fans, coaches, players) – they<br />
were, in the words of another ABBA song,<br />
super troupers, and I thank them all for being<br />
the heart and soul of a wonderful football<br />
event.<br />

notre expérience de la <strong>com</strong>pétition Corée/<br />
Japon 2002 a montré que le grand festival du<br />
football couronne plusieurs “vainqueurs”.<br />
Au football, l’esprit d’équipe est la clé du<br />
succès, et les efforts conjoints des organisateurs<br />
ont abouti à des résultats remarquables.<br />
Cette coopération a fait de la première Coupe<br />
du Monde de la <strong>FIFA</strong> sur le sol asiatique un<br />
événement à l’environnement formidable,<br />
tant pour les joueurs que pour les supporters.<br />
Vingt stades à la pointe de la technologie et<br />
un gazon d’une qualité excellente ont créé<br />
un cadre parfait pour la <strong>com</strong>pétition phare<br />
du football.<br />
Certes, les infrastructures sont importantes,<br />
mais ce sont les hommes qui donnent vie<br />
à une <strong>com</strong>pétition, dans le stade <strong>com</strong>me en<br />
dehors. Coréens et Japonais se sont montrés<br />
accueillants, gentils, attentionnés et enthousiastes<br />
dans leur façon d’encourager les équipes<br />
et leurs supporters – à tout point de vue,<br />
les pays-hôtes en sortent vainqueurs.<br />
L’atmosphère lors des matches de la Corée<br />
ou du Japon fut une expérience formidable et<br />
les manifestations de joie célébrant les performances<br />
des deux équipes auront encouragé<br />
le football de la région. Nos espoirs exprimés<br />
avant le début de cette <strong>com</strong>pétition organisée<br />
conjointement ont été plus que réalisés.<br />
La Coupe du Monde de la <strong>FIFA</strong> 2002<br />
a également constitué une victoire pour le<br />
football, avec de nombreux matches passionnants<br />
et les performances individuelles<br />
impressionnantes. Dès le match d’ouverture,<br />
alors que le Sénégal surprenait le monde<br />
entier pour battre la France tenante du titre,<br />
les surprises devinrent chose courante.<br />
Dans le football, le triomphe et le succès<br />
sont relatifs au statut ou au rôle d’une équipe<br />
particulière. Tout le monde veut devenir champion<br />
du monde, mais pour certains, atteindre<br />
le deuxième tour est déjà une victoire, pour<br />
d’autres encore, être l’hôte parfait est une<br />
expérience valorisante. En Corée et au Japon,<br />
nombreux furent les vainqueurs (administrateurs,<br />
journalistes, supporters, entraîneurs,<br />
joueurs) – et je les remercie d’avoir été le<br />
cœur et l’âme d’une formidable manifestation<br />
de football.
