4 Forewords Joseph S. Blatter, FIFA President The 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan did not really teach us anything new about technique and tactics, but the world order certainly began to wobble. The fact that the quarter-finalists comprised four from Europe, including Turkey, as well as a representative from each of South America, North/Central America, Asia and Africa is merely confirmation of the trend –there are no longer any “minnows” in international football. This delights me, as it is irrefutable proof of the success of over 25 years of FIFA development work. The “new” faces on the world stage will now have to consolidate for 2006, while the “old order” will strive to restore what they regard as normality to the world’s game. This World Cup, the first to be held in Asia, as well as the first to be held in two countries, underlined a number of points. The two host associations, Korea and Japan, more than repaid the faith placed in them; the co-hosting arrangement did not detract from the sporting success of the tournament; the organisation and logistics behind the competition left no cause for complaint; the hospitality of both host nations was a joy to behold and experience; and last but not least, the behaviour of the fans and players was fairer and more peaceable than ever. To sum up, this was a World Cup full of smiles, surprises and Fair Play. Of course, no World Cup is without its problems, so we will now sit down and discuss ways of preventing the same mistakes in the future. I would like to offer my sincerest thanks and respect to the two host associations, the LOCs and the governments of Korea and Japan, as well as the AFC and the organising team at FIFA, who all worked so hard to ensure everything ran according to plan. My thanks also go to the 32 finalist teams, our commercial partners, the media, and of course, the fans from all around the globe who were an integral part of this wonderful festival of football that helps to foster understanding and tolerance. I hope you enjoy reading this detailed analysis of the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan, compiled by experts from all around the world. Sur les plans tactique et technique, la Coupe du Monde de la FIFA, Corée/Japon 2002 ne nous a pas appris grand chose de nouveau. Mais elle a confirmé des certitudes: l’ordre établi a tremblé. La présence en quarts de finale de quatre équipes européennes, dont la Turquie, ainsi que d’un représentant d’Amérique du Sud, d’Amérique du Nord et centrale, d’Asie et d’Afrique, ne fait que confirmer la tendance actuelle qui veut qu’au niveau international, il n’existe plus de “petites” équipes. Cette évolution me plait, elle est le résultat de 25 années de travail de longue haleine de la FIFA pour le développement. En 2006, les équipes-surprises devront confirmer, tandis que les équipes bien établies tenteront de réinstaurer l’ordre. La première Coupe du Monde organisée en Asie, et dans deux pays qui plus est, a révélé quelques éléments importants: les deux associations organisatrices, la Corée et le Japon, se sont montrées à la hauteur de la confiance placée en elles; l’organisation conjointe n’a eu aucune répercussion négative sur le sport; au niveau de l’organisation et de la logistique, tout fut presque parfait; l’hospitalité des hôtes fut un modèle du genre; le comportement des supporters et des joueurs fut plus amical et paisible que jamais. En bref, la Coupe du Monde 2002 fut une Coupe du Monde de sourires, de surprises et de fair-play. Certains problèmes, comme en présente chaque Coupe du Monde, seront analysés en profondeur afin d’être évités à l’avenir. J’adresse mes remerciements et mon respect les plus sincères aux deux associations organisatrices, aux COLs et aux gouvernements de Corée et du Japon pour avoir mis en place une compétition irréprochable, mais aussi à l’AFC et à notre Organisation de la FIFA pour la Coupe du Monde. Je tiens également à remercier les 32 équipes participantes, nos partenaires commerciaux, les médias et les supporters dans le monde entier, qui ont contribué à cette fantastique fête du football et de la réunion des peuples.
