Cet animal conserve une place dans la croyance et la
culture malgache, même si une partie de la population le
considère comme mangeur d’homme. Il est très respecté et
conservé dans certaines régions. Selon les croyances, il est
la réincarnation de leurs ancêtres et protège les territoires
où il vit. Il est donc formellement interdit de le chasser ni de
le manger de peur de subir un mauvais sort. Le crocodile est
également considéré comme le roi des eaux étant donné
qu’à terre il est plus vulnérable.
La légende du lac d’Antanavo ou le lac sacré d’Anivorano
illustre bien cette place occupée par le crocodile dans la
culture. Les crocodiles sont la réincarnation des âmes des
anciens habitants disparus de l’ancien village. Des couples
stériles et des patients y viennent pour invoquer les esprits
des habitants disparus pour demander faveur.
Chez les Antandroy, ethnie dans le Sud de la Grande Île, un
clan appelé Zafindravoay se disent être les descendants des
crocodiles. Cette légende raconte qu’une de leurs ancêtres a
épousé un crocodile et est partie vivre avec lui dans les eaux.
Une fois enceinte, elle n’est revenue parmi les siens que pour
accoucher de deux enfants. Elle disparaît de nouveau pour
rejoindre son mari. Ayant connu ce mythe, les descendants
de cette femme ne tuent guère les crocodiles. Ils peuvent
pénétrer sans peur dans les eaux infestées, et pêchent
librement sur les rivages. Ces reptiles ne s’attaquent pas à
eux. Cette légende s’est étendue jusqu’à la tribu d’Antanosy
Avaratra. Ce peuple considère le crocodile étant leur
protecteur et lui dédie un culte régulier.
Une autre histoire raconte qu’un crocodile avait été placé
et vivait dans le Lac Anosy à l’époque de la Reine Ranavalona
1ère pour la protéger de tout danger. En effet, ce crocodile
remonte à la surface en signe de présage de danger.

The legend of the lake of Antanavo and the sacred lake of
Anivorano is a good illustration of the role occupied by the
crocodile in Malagasy culture. Crocodiles are seen as the
reincarnation of the souls of former inhabitants of old villages.
Couples unable to have children and the sick come to invoke
the spirits of deceased inhabitants to request favours.
Among the Antandroy, an ethnic group in the south of
Madagascar, a clan called the Zafindravoay consider themselves
to be descendants of crocodiles. The legend says that one
of their ancestors married a crocodile and went to live with
him underwater, only coming back to land each time she was
pregnant, giving birth to two children, after which she would
disappear once more with her husband. Familiar with this
myth, the descendants of the woman will never kill a crocodile.
They can wade without fear into the infested waters and fish
freely along the banks, as the reptile will never attack them.
This legend has spread as far as the Antanosy Avaratra tribe.
These people consider that the crocodile protects them and it is
the object of regular worship.
Another story is that a crocodile had been sent to live in the
lake of Anosy at the time of Queen Ranavalona I, to protect her
from all dangers and, indeed, crocodiles today will swim up to
the surface of the water when they sense danger.
