3 rd PORT & SHIPPING TECH<br />
Genoa will hold Port & Shipping Tech, an international<br />
convention dedicated to technological innovation, competitive<br />
and sustainable development of port logistics<br />
and shipping The convention which attracted more than<br />
1,000 participants and 120 lecturers last year will again<br />
offer workshops and stands. This year attention will be<br />
paid to projects and solutions offered by new technology<br />
in particular green shipping, green ports and traffic<br />
evolution.<br />
The convention will look at city logistics and sustainable<br />
mobility in ports and the better use of rail including<br />
the role of private operators. Green shipping will<br />
discuss the use of natural gas in marine engines and<br />
methods of reducing CO2 emissions. Traffic evolution will consider opportunities in the Mediterranean and in South<br />
America. Green ports considers renewable energy in ports and coastal cities including the generation of energy<br />
from the sea.<br />
This year the convention will be accompanied by “Smart Cities, Green City Energy On the Sea” which will include<br />
a test track for electric and low emission vehicles.<br />
GENOA PORT ALTERNATIVE<br />
ENERGY<br />
Genoa port looks at bio fuel generators operating<br />
on barges to reduce emissions from vessels anchored<br />
in port by not using their on board generators and to<br />
supply electricity to the city. The project called Tritone<br />
has been developed by Europam and has its inaugural<br />
presentation in Genoa. The barge with its double hull<br />
and variable draught can be anchored at sea where it<br />
will be safe from menace in certain countries. In addition<br />
the size of the barge means reduced visual impact<br />
and use of space in port. It requires 3,000 sq mt of<br />
water compared with the 50,000 sq mt of land required for a conventional power station with similar capacity.<br />
The cost of the Tritone project is estimated to be 70 million Euros and the construction could well be awarded to<br />
an Italian yard and will take not more than 18 months. The plant has a capacity of 56 MW and will use bio fuels.<br />
LIGURIA’S PORTS - TOGETHER A<br />
FORCE<br />
The pole made up of the ports of Savona, Genoa and<br />
La Spezia expects double figures traffic growth in 2011.<br />
President of the 3 ports in an interview with <strong>Porto</strong>&<strong>diporto</strong><br />
explained that their success was due to planning, dredging,<br />
new wharves and IT. Italian port traffic only increased<br />
by 27% from 1997 to 2008 compared with 50% in European<br />
ports. The ability to use law 84//94 means ports can<br />
finally find finance autonomously. However it is not only a<br />
financial problem. We have asked the authorities to simplify<br />
procedures including port planning and dredging and<br />
to give Port Authorities powers in a number of areas.<br />
Our competition comes from the Northern Range and<br />
from Southern ports with lower costs. We are working with<br />
other Authorities and logistics experts in the Lombardy plain to improve our service. Northern Europe competes in<br />
the Lombardy plain with many services including rail which requires restructuring to give a better service.<br />
Africa is an ever more interesting area for us and we were present at Intermodal in Casablanca and we are actively<br />
working on collaboration with Morocco.
