3 rd PORT & SHIPPING TECH
Genoa will hold Port & Shipping Tech, an international
convention dedicated to technological innovation, competitive
and sustainable development of port logistics
and shipping The convention which attracted more than
1,000 participants and 120 lecturers last year will again
offer workshops and stands. This year attention will be
paid to projects and solutions offered by new technology
in particular green shipping, green ports and traffic
evolution.
The convention will look at city logistics and sustainable
mobility in ports and the better use of rail including
the role of private operators. Green shipping will
discuss the use of natural gas in marine engines and
methods of reducing CO2 emissions. Traffic evolution will consider opportunities in the Mediterranean and in South
America. Green ports considers renewable energy in ports and coastal cities including the generation of energy
from the sea.
This year the convention will be accompanied by “Smart Cities, Green City Energy On the Sea” which will include
a test track for electric and low emission vehicles.
GENOA PORT ALTERNATIVE
ENERGY
Genoa port looks at bio fuel generators operating
on barges to reduce emissions from vessels anchored
in port by not using their on board generators and to
supply electricity to the city. The project called Tritone
has been developed by Europam and has its inaugural
presentation in Genoa. The barge with its double hull
and variable draught can be anchored at sea where it
will be safe from menace in certain countries. In addition
the size of the barge means reduced visual impact
and use of space in port. It requires 3,000 sq mt of
water compared with the 50,000 sq mt of land required for a conventional power station with similar capacity.
The cost of the Tritone project is estimated to be 70 million Euros and the construction could well be awarded to
an Italian yard and will take not more than 18 months. The plant has a capacity of 56 MW and will use bio fuels.
LIGURIA’S PORTS - TOGETHER A
FORCE
The pole made up of the ports of Savona, Genoa and
La Spezia expects double figures traffic growth in 2011.
President of the 3 ports in an interview with Porto&diporto
explained that their success was due to planning, dredging,
new wharves and IT. Italian port traffic only increased
by 27% from 1997 to 2008 compared with 50% in European
ports. The ability to use law 84//94 means ports can
finally find finance autonomously. However it is not only a
financial problem. We have asked the authorities to simplify
procedures including port planning and dredging and
to give Port Authorities powers in a number of areas.
Our competition comes from the Northern Range and
from Southern ports with lower costs. We are working with
other Authorities and logistics experts in the Lombardy plain to improve our service. Northern Europe competes in
the Lombardy plain with many services including rail which requires restructuring to give a better service.
Africa is an ever more interesting area for us and we were present at Intermodal in Casablanca and we are actively
working on collaboration with Morocco.
