GRIMALDI LINES DEDICATED<br />

TO INNOVATION<br />

Grimaldi Group Naples 25th annual Euromed<br />

conference was the occasion to present the<br />

Group’s future plans and policies. Innovation<br />

and respect for the environment will lead to improved<br />

ability to compete and cost reduction<br />

by substituting older vessels. Increasing the<br />

number of lines improves the modular service<br />

on land and on sea and generates economic,<br />

social and environmental savings as well as<br />

creating the opportunity to use latest generation<br />

vessels. Even today the Grimaldi fleet is<br />

one of the youngest in the world. 3,000 million<br />

Euros have been invested in vessels in the last<br />

few years and investment in new builds continues.<br />

Despite the crisis Grimaldi Group Naples has maintained its turnover at the pre crisis level of 2,500 million Euros<br />

per year. The Group’s liquidity enables it make less use of bank debt than most of its competitors and enables it to<br />

continue investing in land facilities as well restructuring Finnlines a subsidiary.<br />

EU TO ADOPT ITALY’S ECOBONUS<br />

Italy’s experience with its Ecobonus, an incentive<br />

scheme to encourage movement of trucks by sea<br />

rather than road has led the EU to ask for tenders for<br />

an Ecobonus feasibility study. The Italian Ecobonus<br />

can reimburse as much as 30% of the ticket price<br />

on certain sea routes known as “motorways of the<br />

sea”. The intention is to encourage forms of association<br />

of smaller road transporters to make use of the<br />

sea and to help them finance hardware and software<br />

destined to improve efficiency in the transport chain<br />

in conditions of maximum safety.<br />

The Ecobonus scheme was set up in 2006 and between<br />

2007 and 2009 has paid out 170 million Euros<br />

with a further 30 million Euros available for 20<strong>10</strong>.<br />

In the three years from 2007 to 2009, 44 million tons of freight in 1,430,290 trips were transported by sea, that is<br />

the equivalent of 500,000 TIR taken off the road contributing a social dividend of 411 million Euros<br />

63° SPACE EXPOSITION FOR<br />

NAPLES IN 2012<br />

The 63rd International Space exhibition to be held<br />

in Naples in 2012 is expected to generate further industry<br />

earnings on top of the current 5<strong>10</strong> million Euros<br />

including orders for the <strong>10</strong>0 small and medium sized<br />

businesses located in the Campania area and benefiting<br />

the city. The presence of major world aerospace<br />

companies offers an important opportunity for local<br />

businesses. The convention will enable Italy’s research<br />

in universities and research centres to be presented.<br />

Much work is carried out in the Campania region including<br />

the Irene space capsule which is <strong>10</strong>0% made<br />

in Campania.<br />
