To develop research to quantify the transport, transformations and fate of
sediments, organic matter, nutrients and trace metals at the continent-
with economic chains and natural processes, showing similarities and
differences on contamination and eutrophication processes and carrying
capacities of estuarine ecosystem and the sustainable management of their
Summary of achievements and perspectives
This institute first year was devoted to several expeditions to Antarctica,
the Southern Ocean and the Bolivian Andes. In particular, we
carried out the first national scientific expedition to the interior of
Antarctica to collect ice cores, which cover the climatic history of the
last 300 years. Results points to signs of South American biomass
burning in Antarctica snow and ice. Over the next three years, teleconnections
between the Antarctic and South America climates will be
intensively investigated based on these ice cores. One new international
program was established, CASA (Climate of Antarctica and South
America, http://www.polartropical.org/casa/), a join initiative with the
Climate Change Institute, University of Maine, USA. In the Bolivian
Andes, we are monitoring glaciers that form the headwaters of the
Madeira River drainage basin.
This institute has established the largest network to monitor the permafrost
and its associated vegetation in sites in the Maritime Antarctica and
the Antarctic Peninsula; these studies will be expanded to the Andes and
the Arctic in the near future. Our oceanographic groups conducted several
expeditions to the Southern Ocean, mainly near the Antarctic Peninsula,
to investigate the temporal variability of hydrological parameters. Dilution
of oceanic bottom waters is observed in the region, possibly resulting
from the Antarctic Peninsula continental ice masses partial melting. This
institute research groups also carried out observations in the Southwest
Atlantic Ocean, mainly to study the confluence of the Brazilian and
Falklands (Malvinas) currents, an investigation essential to understand
the connections between Antarctica and south-southeast Brazilian coast
oceanic processes.
Summary of achievements and perspectives
Important results were obtained in relation to environmental proxies of
global climate changes in the semiarid coast of Brazil. The displacement
of coastal dunes seems to reflect the intensity of meteorological conditions
including ENSO-ITCZ teleconnections, which are impacted by global climate
change. This process has been relatively well characterized and modeled.
Regional and global changes were studied through the response of hydrological
parameters in local rivers, the extension of mangrove forests and
the formation of river islands. Some of these results were the theme form
conferences proffered in many meetings, especial courses and congresses
and many are original to science. A significant advance in hydrological and
hydrochemical studies was achieved by performing simultaneous oceano-
Sedimentological and environmental contamination studies in the
southeastern Brazilian coast
Thermographic images of the superficial temperature of the Brazilian graphic cruises covering the entire continuum river-estuary-plume-shelf,
toco toucan (Ramphastos toco). The bill is used as a transient thermal
radiator. In warm environments, adjustments on the Blood flow to
the bill grant to the largest member of the toucans the remarkable
capacity to regulate heat dissipation
along the northeastern Brazilian coast. The simultaneously obtained results
will form the basis for a model development in charge of the INCT of Climate
Changes, in cooperation with our project. Numerous scientific results
