Summary of achievements and perspectives
The Subprograms BIOCHEMISTRY AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY, PHYSIO-
PATHOLOGY and IMMUNOLOGY have started isolating and characterizing
animal venoms and toxins, and studying the structural immunochemical
aspects, inflammatory/anti-inflammatory actions and local and systemic
effects of biologically active molecules present in these venoms, especially
of snakes of the genera Bothrops, Micrurus and Crotalus and of different
species of arachnids. The results obtained were presented at national
Biomarkers – Several papers have been published concerning oxidative
and international congresses, besides being published in specialized
stress, neurotrophins and cytokines as mediators of cognitive impairment
journals with good reach of the international scientific community. In the
and health, which normally occur in recurrent mood episodes in bipolar
Subprogram Immunology, two themes were included EFFECT OF SBA-15
patients. We have also shown, in a preliminary way, that BDNF serum
developed a systemic toxicity index to evaluate peripheral changes in
WO/2009/093189. This invention shows peptides capable of stimulating
mood episodes. So far, we have around 150 patients involved in clinical
the production of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins of fibroblasts, for
research, where we will be able to evaluate serum BDNF changes as
example, which can therefore be utilized as agents for tissue regeneration
predictors to treatment response in bipolar depression, as well as their
and as cosmetics. Another patent was the IMMUNOSSUPRESSOR EFFECT
OF NON IMMUNOGENIC PROTEIN OF THE VENOM OF Lachesis muta that
is in preparation in partnership with the company CRISTALIA LABORATORY.
