collaborations. New application on the field of microbiological control and
treatment of pre-malignant lesions had a good success during this year.
The Innovation axis has activities concentrated on the LAT laboratory—
Laboratory for Applied Technology. There, the activity consists to develop
new devices, interfaces with local high-technology enterprises, and
creates spin-off companies to commercialize new applications developed
at the Center. The INOF Innovation, this year has resulted in the
creation of a new company and collaborate with the many optics-based
companies in Sao Carlos. On the automation innovative program, we are
working on the project of robotic passenger cars (or “intelligent cars”)
that are able to deal with real traffic situations in urban areas. This is
certainly one of the biggest challenges of this century. In this research,
the sensing system used has considerable influence on the strategy
designed to model the navigation algorithms
The Outreach Science diffusion program involves educational activities at
all levels from elementary school to post-graduate continuing education.
The Week of Optics, SEMOPTICA, has become a major annual event in
the school calendar all over the State of Sao Paulo. This year in special,
it was a great success with more than 2000 students present in a whole
body of activities The INOF broadcasts on Educational Television not
only university level courses, but also programs popularizing important
developments in optics-based science and technology. The Center has
developed a Mobile Science Unit, a specially prepared bus to visit schools
for the purpose of presenting scientific demonstration and expositions.
Among the main activities for 2009 we have new different programs
on the TV channel as well as a virtual museum. The program “USP goes
to your School” has reached a tremendous success with an increasing
demand for visits to different schools. We also should put in evidence
the latest program where prominent Brazilian scientists in many fields
present their experiences and the pleasure to be a scientist.
Summary of achievements and perspectives
The research groups of INEO showed a good performance in this first
year, producing important results in organic electronics and related
topics, either in fundamental research or in applications (synthetic materials
and biosystem). It was published several papers, some produced
from new and emergent groups. The interaction among the groups of
INEO has been one of the strongest point of the network. In this first year,
INEO produced 32 master and 16 PhD theses. It was also involved in
research 40 students of scientific initiation. In total, there are at about
300 students in the INEO network.
