extraction of Ni, Co e Cu were improved based on detailed mineral characterization
and kinetic leaching studies. Two patents related to processes
for cyanide recovery from industrial effluents were filed. Studies on
“Sulfide oxidation applied to the control of acid mine drainage and metal
extraction” evidenced the effect of carbonate on the mechanism of pyrite
oxidation in alkaline solution and modeling of the chalcopyrite (001)
surface was investigated. Increasing interactions of INCT-Acqua, abroad
as well as associations with companies, have increased the dynamics of
knowledge and enhanced the transfer of information, so the perspectives
for future works are beyond the expectation.
Main research topics
• Research. The Institute has two basic research lines: (1) Diversity and
taxonomy of plants and fungi; (2) use of data of occurrence of species for
formulation of public politics regarding plant and fungi diversity.
• Formation of human resources. A program of courses of advanced
techniques in taxonomy, formation of curators and technical personal for
herbaria and informatics for biodiversity would allow better qualification
of the collections of the Brazilian herbaria and the digitalization and
disposal of data.
• Transfer of knowledge to the society. The determination of the name
of a specimen and its diffusion in an open and free access system is a
fundamental part of the strategy for transference of taxonomic knowledge
to the society. It is the taxonomic knowledge, represented by a scientific
name that makes it possible to integrate, in a dynamic form, data and
knowledge of different collections producing information that can be used
as subsidy for analysis of specialists of diverse areas such as: environment,
health, agriculture and industry.
available on-line; improve the programs of research in biodiversity and
taxonomy that contribute for improvement of data quality of the herbaria
collections; continue the formation of technicians in herbarium and
informatics for biodiversity, and of graduates, masters and doctors in
taxonomy.
