Main research topics
Surface engineering is widely used in industrial production of developed
countries. Surface engineering is the technology of preparation
and modification of engineering devices that fulfills specific functions
without significant change in the component dimensions. It provides
technological advantage and produces effective solutions in several
industrial sectors like, oil and gas industry, aeronautic and aerospace,
car industry, micro and nanoelectronics, etc. The project of
INES consists of three main research areas: 1) functionalization, 2)
protection and 3) metrology of surfaces from both fundamental and
technological standpoints.
Summary of achievements and perspectives
The INES has stimulated and/or started a series of activities such as
collaboration between high qualified research groups from different
institutions. It was also present in industrial exhibitions (Plastech 2009,
for example), technical courses and it had a strong interaction with
companies from metal-mechanics and polymer transformation area.
We advanced in the description of the thermal stability of surfaces and
interfaces that are relevant for (nano)electronics. We have studied
the semiconductors SiC and Ge; the dielectrics LaLuO3, HfO2, Al2O3,
and SiON; and the metal Pt. By understanding the transport of oxygen,
nitrogen, hydrogen, and different heavier elements in these materials we
expect to contribute for their use in electronic devices that provide high
performance and low power consumption.
Besides the development of new deposition processes and surface
treatments based on cold plasmas with potential applications in
metal-mechanics, textile and biomedical industries, INES researchers
developed a new high performance coating: diamond-like
carbon (DLC)-nanodiamond composite films which are promising
materials for tribological applications. Further improvement on DLC
and titanium-based coatings are expected as a result of the present
investigations.
We are developing a new technique to characterize nanostructures on a
surface using medium-energy ion scattering. We have already determined
shape and size distribution of the Au nanoparticles(NPs) adsorbed
on a multilayered film of weak polyelectrolyteis and Pb nanoislands
at Si/SiO2 interface. The results are very promising and open new perspectives
to analyze core-shell NPs and to investigate the formation of
nanostructures in situ.
Summary of achievements and perspectives
In the past year, InWeb promoted two internal workshops, where five
research projects were defined. These projects focus on the four main
goals of the institute: cutting edge research, innovation, technology transfer,
education of highly qualified human resources, and dissemination
of science and technology related to the Web. These five projects are:
(1) Web Watch, (2) GreenWeb: Save the Web from Pollution, (3) Portal of
Science and Technology, (4) Cahpeta – Content Aware High-PErformance
sTream Analyser, and (5) Collection, selection, processing and storage of
documents from the official websites.
The Web Watch (www.observatorio.inweb.org.br) is the project that
produced more results so far, and its main goal is to monitor important
events on the Web. At the moment, the impact of the Web in the Brazilian
Presidential Elections and the 2010 World Cup are being followed.
GreenWeb, in turn, aims at fighting pollution on the Web, i.e., to identify
content that does not add any information gain in services provided to
the Web user. The Portal of Science and Technology aims at studying
science and technology collaboration networks involving Brazilian researchers
that participate in all INCTs.
Cahpeta, the fourth project, will create an intelligent environment to
access streams of information and extract what is relevant from it to be
processed and its results disseminated. At last, Collection, Processing
and Availability of Web Documents will create documents databases
(including text, images, videos, music, etc) and make interfaces and
services available for their easy access.
InWeb’s goals include the generation of cutting edge research,
technology transfer to industry and science dissemination to the
general public. We are also organizing a Winter School for secondary
level students, where we are going to talk about social networks on
the Web.
