We characterized the photosynthetic system of sugarcane in elevated CO2 by increasing its capacity to capture light, responses to different herbicides and to drought stress. A group of differentially expressed genes was found that afford distinction among sugarcane varieties that contrast in relation to sucrose content, fiber content and also varieties that respond differently to drought stress. There was a significant advancement in sugarcane transformation and we now have transformed plants that growing in at least three laboratories. In parallel, classic genetics is being put forward and we have now produced molecular markers that are expected to afford crossings and development of new varieties much faster. We constructed a quarantine green-house which will make possible to import varieties of sugarcane that we do not have in Brazil as well as to bring other species (e.g. Miscanthus) to Brazil for further comparative studies. A great number of enzymes has been characterized, many of them isolated and they are now being intensively studied regarding their structure and biochemistry. Two quimeric enzymes (containing two catalytic sites that degrade hemicellulose and lignin at the same time), were produced and are now being tested on biomass enzymes were purified that are important for the production of cellulosic ethanol. We also found strains of yeast that are capable to metabolize pentose.
