Zahara, uma refugiada sem nacionalidade, vive numa ilha remota na
Malásia com a sobrinha da venda no mercado negro de ovos de tartaruga.
Um dia chega um homem, Samad, que diz que anda
a estudar as tartarugas e lhe pede ajuda. Zahara e Samad vivem
então uma história cheia de duplicidade e decepção. O passado e o
presente e os fantasmas que trazem. Prémio FIPRESCI no Festival
de Locarno.
Realizador e produtor malaio muito premiado internacionalmente,
conhecido por “The Elephant and the Sea”, Prémio Especial do Júri
do Festival de Turim, “Woman on Fire Looks for Water” (2009),
que recebeu uma menção no Festival de Cannes, “Stone Turtle”
(2022), premiado no Festival de Locarno e “The Tiger Factory”
(2010) que passou no Festival de Cannes e Menção Especial no
Festival de Tóquio.
Zahara, a stateless refugee, lives on a small remote island in Malaysia,
where she makes a living selling turtle eggs. One day, Samad, claiming
to be a university researcher, visits the island, wanting to employ
Zahara to show him around. As the day goes on, Zahara and Samad
become entangled in a dangerous dance of duplicity and deception.
The past and the present and the ghosts they bring. Selection of the
Locarno Film Festival where it won the FIPRESCI Award.
Director and producer from Malaysia , with 6 international prizes, is best
known for “The Elephant and the Sea”, Special Award of the Jury at the
Turino Film Festival, “Woman on Fire Looks for Water” (2009), which
won a Mention at the Cannes Festival, “Stone Turtle” (2022) awarded
the FIPRESCI top prize at Locarno Festival and “The Tiger Factory”
(2010) also screened at Cannes and Special mention of the Jury at the
Tokyo Film Festival.
