“Liz, de 45 anos e solteira, é uma psicóloga pediátrica que trabalha
com crianças especiais. Passou muito tempo da sua vida a tratar dos
seus pais doentes. Depois de eles morrerem, Liz está sozinha
e resignada a uma vida solitária. Por conselho dos seus amigos
Marco e Lauren, Liz começa a simplificar a casa onde vive e conhece
Josh, de 26 anos, um jovem antiquário. Josh tem vivido sozinho há
anos, depois de perder o pai e o avô e sem grande memória da mãe.
As respectivas solidões juntam-nos, criando um elo especial entre
eles. Esta foi a primeira longa-metragem da realizadora Joji Alonso.
Produzi ainda alguns dos seus filmes, incluindo “Ekstra” (incluída
nesta retrospectiva), “Tandem” e “ Ilawod”, ambas exibidas no Fantasporto.
Joji foi a minha primeira realizadora e este filme esteve na

““Ekstra” (The Bit Player) é uma comédia dramática social que
segue o dia aparentemente normal de Loida Malabanan que inicia
mais uma jornada de filmagens de uma telenovela como figurante.
À medida que as filmagens se desenrolam, temos uma ideia do sistema
de produção e da exploração dos trabalhadores marginalizados
como ela. Quando interrompi a minha atividade como produtor
em 2010, alguns dos meus amigos realizadores, como Jeffrey Jeturian,
ajudaram-me a ganhar a vida recomendando-me como fornecedor
de gente com talento. Assim, entre 2010 e 2012, trabalhei
como caçador de talentos para filmes e programas de televisão
no meu país. Foi a minha experiência durante este período que me
levou ao conceito de “Ekstra”com a minha atriz filipina favorita,
Vilma Santos, no papel principal.” - F.L.
“Liz, 45 and single, is a clinical psychologist who works with special and
gifted children. She has spent much of her adult life looking after her
sickly parents. After her parents passed, Liz finds herself alone and
resigned to a solitary life. Upon advice of her friends Marco and Lauren,
Liz begins downsizing her home and meets Josh, 26, a young antique
dealer. Josh has been living on his own for years, after losing his father
and grandfather, and without much memory of his mother. With their
loneliness drawing them together, Liz and Josh create a special bond.
This was director Joji Alonso’s first feature film. I have produced some of
her films including “Ekstra” (included in this retrospective), “Tandem”
and “Ilawod” both shown here in Fantasporto. Joji was my first female
director and this film was a selection in the Cinemalaya Independent
Film Festival.” - F.L.
“EKSTRA (THE BIT PLAYER) is a socio-realist drama-comedy film,
it follows a seemingly usual day in the life of Loida Malabanan as she
embarks on yet another shooting day of a soap opera as an extra.
As the shoot goes on, we get a glimpse of the truth in the ruling system
of the production as well as the exploitation of the marginalized laborers
like her. When I took a break from producing in 2010, some of my
director-friends including Jeffrey Jeturian helped me make both ends
meet by recommending me to their home networks and movie
companies as a talent supplier. Thus, from 2010 to 2012, I worked
primarily as talent supplier for films and television programs in my
country. It was my experiences during this period that inspired me to
develop the concept of EKSTRA which starred my favorite Filipino
actress Vilma Santos.” - F.L.

JEFFREY JETURIAN
Joji Villanueva Alonso é uma realizadora e produtora. Produziu os
premiados “The Bet Collector”, “The Woman In The Septic Tank”,
“The Bit Player” e “Big Night”. Os seus filmes “Tandem” e “ Ilawod”
foram exibidos no Fantasporto. A sua primeira curta-metragem,
“Last Order”, venceu o Prémio de Melhor Curta no Pyongyang
International Film Festival em 2018. “Belle Douleur” recebeu
o Prémio do Público no Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival e o
de Melhor Actor, para Kit Thompson no Houston International
Film Festival e, mais importante, o Prémio Especial do Júri
desse festival.
Joji Villanueva Alonso is a producer and director. She produced the
award-winning films “The Bet Collector”, “The Woman In the Septic
Tank”, “The Bit Player” and “Big Night”. Her films “Tandem” and
“Ilawod” were shown here in Oporto. Her first short film “Last Order”
won the Best Short Film at the Pyongyang International Film Festival
in 2018. “Belle Douleur” received the Audience Award at the
Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival and won the Best Actor award
for Kit Thompson at the Houston International Film Festival and more
importantly, the Special Jury prize from the same festival.
Jeffrey Jeturian nasceu a 4 de Novembro de 1959 em Manila,
nas Filipinas. Estudou Comunicação de Rádio e TV na Universidade
das Filipinas. Depois da universidade, em 1983, trabalhou em
produção, subindo a escada, desde assistente de produção,
continuidade, direção artística, produção e assistente de realização
ao longo de um período de 15 anos, antes de chegar ao seu sonho,
o de ser realizador de pleno direito em 1998. O seu filme, “Kubrador”
(The Bet Collector) venceu os Prémios da FIPRESCI em Moscovo
e em Nova Deli.
Jeffrey Jeturian was born November 4, 1959 in Manila, Philippines.
He took up Broadcast Communication at the University of the
Philippines. After college in 1983, he worked in film production,
climbing his way up from being production assistant, script continuity,
art director, production designer and assistant director over a 15-year
period before finally fulfilling his dream of becoming a full-fledged film
director in 1998. His film “Kubrador” (The Bet Collector) won
FIPRESCI awards from Moscow and New Delhi.
