The power of Celtic pagan rituals endures in the memory of Wales. With
mines closing and unemployment rising, a journalist named Frazer becomes
involved with an intern from his newspaper whose brother had
died under strange circumstances. His investigation leads him to suspect
an industrialist with political ambitions. Drawn into a series of pagan
rituals, he participates in one of them. Among the cast of the film
is Jon Finch, who starred in Hitchcock’s “Frenzy” and later in Ridley
Scott’s “Kingdom of Heaven.”
At Fantasporto, “Darklands” won the Critics’ Award in 1997, as well
as Best Screenplay and Special Jury Prize for Fantastic Cinema. It also
won Best Film at the Festival of Fantastic Films in the UK and the
Silver Award at WorldFest Houston in the USA.
