“A pequena distância do bairro vermelho da cidade está Area, um
quarteirão de casas de prostituição em que uma multidão de
prostitutas se podem vender por uma lata de sardinhas ou a crédito.
Durante o seu apogeu, Area teve cerca de 700 bordéis que serviam
milhares de homens de pouco rendimento, rapazes com hormonas
activas e desajustados da sociedade, todos para aproveitar as
vantagens dos preços baixos. Hilary, uma das trabalhadoras de sexo,
guarda as suas economias para fazer a sua viagem de sonho para o
Estados Unidos para encontrar o filho a quem perdeu o rasto
devido ao pânico causado pela erupção do Vulcão Pinatubo.
O filme baseia-se nas histórias que ouvi aos meus colegas do liceu
sobre como perderam a virgindade nos anos 80. Falei do meu
conceito ao realizador Luisito Lagdameo Ignacio. Demorou 25
anos a concretizar o filme. Disseram-nos depois que o local foi
demolido pelas autoridades depois de verem o filme.” - F.L.
“A short distance from the city’s red-light district is Area, a neighborhood
of brothels where over-the-hill sex workers can be had for a can of
sardines or even on credit. During its heyday, Area had up to 700
brothels servicing thousands of low-income men, hormonally active
boys and society misfits - all taking advantage of the bargain price of
sex available only at Area. Hillary, one of the sex workers, keeps her
life-savings to fulfil a dream to travel to the United States to find a son
she said she lost during the panic caused by the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo.
The film was based on stories I heard from my male classmates in high
school on how they lost their virginity in the 80’s. I told director Luisito
Lagdameo Ignacio about my concept. It took almost 25 years before it
got made into a film. We were told that our location in the film was
demolished by the city government after watching the film.” - F.L.
LUISITO LAGDAMEO IGNACIO
Luisito Lagdameo Ignacio começou a sua carreira como realizador
de videoclips para os melhores cantores e um conhecido director
de programas de variedades. A sua primeira longa-metragem foi
“Asintado” (Between The Eyes). O seu filme “Laut” venceu o Prémio
de Melhor Actriz e uma Menção no Fantasporto 2016
e “School Service” venceu a Melhor Actriz na Semana dos Realizadores,
e Melhor Actriz e uma Menção do Orient Express no Fantas
de 2019. Venceu ainda o Prémio Especial do Júri no 12º Eurasia
International Film Festival no Casaquistão.
Luisito Lagdameo Ignacio started his career as a music video director for
Filipino top singers and a TV director for variety programs. His first
independent feature Asintado (Between the Eyes). His film Laut won
Best Actress and Special Mention at the 2016 Oporto International
Film Festival and School Service won Best Actress in the Director’s
Week and Special Mention in the Orient Express here in Oporto in
2019. Area won Special Jury Prize at the 12th Eurasia International
Film Festival in Kazakhstan.
“Depois de uma tempestade súbita e violenta, uma adormecida
aldeia piscatória na pequena ilha do sul de Tagalog acorda para um
fenómeno extraordinário - o mar está vermelho. Flutuando nas
suas águas estão milhares de maçãs. Ninguém sabe de onde vieram.
Alguns suspeitam de que é augúrio de má sorte de Baconaua, uma
criatura mitológica. Poucos acreditam num milagre do céu e outras
pensam que vem tudo de um lugar sinistro. Esta foi a última longametragem
em que eu trabalhei com Joseph Israel Laban.
Infelizmente, Joseph morreu em 25 de Julho de 2021, vítima de
Covid-19 com 40 anos de idade. Este foi o nosso quarto filme
depois de “Cuchera” (2011), “Termitari” (2013) e “The Sister”

“After a particularly strong squall, a sleepy fishing village on a tiny island
in Southern Tagalog wakes up to an astonishing sight - their sea has
turned red. Floating on their waters are thousands of apples. No one
knows where they came from. Some suspect this is a bad omen from the
baconaua - a creature of myth. Few believe it to be a miracle from
heaven, while others fear a more sinister source.
This was the last film that I worked with Joseph Israel Laban. Sadly,
Joseph passed away on July 25, 2021 due to Covid 19 at the age of 40.
This was our fourth film after his first film “Cuchera” (2011), “Termitari”
(2013) and “The Sister” (2016).” - F.L.

Joseph Israel Laban (1981- 2021) obteve o grau de bacharel em
Escrita Criativa na University of the Philippines at Diliman.
Também frequentou a New York University com uma bolsa
Fulbright para a sua licenciatura em Jornalismo com especialidade
em Notícias e Documentário.
A sua primeira longa-metragem,”Cuchera”, foi exibida no Festival
de Toronto. Em 2015 venceu o Prémio de Melhor Realização no
ASEAN International Film Festival. Joseph foi um dos realizadores
filipinos que faleceram devido ao Covid-19.
Joseph Israel Laban (March 9, 1981 - July 25, 2021) obtained his
bachelor’s degree in Creative Writing from the University of the
Philippines at Diliman. He also attended New York University on a
Fulbright Scholarship for his master’s degree in Journalism with
a concentration in News and Documentary. His first feature film
“Cuchera” was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival.
In 2015, he won the Best Director award at the ASEAN International
Film Festival and Awards for “Nuwebe”. Joseph was one of the Filipino
filmmakers who passed away due to Covid 19.
