SÃO CARLOS: PRESENT, FUTURE,
CHALLENGES, PERSPECTIVES
São Carlos is a town localized near the geographic center
of São Paulo State. It has, at present 256.915 habitants
(IBGE, 2023).
With a mild climate (average yearly temperature 22oC),
situated at an elevation of 900 meters, São Carlos is in
the headwaters of the Tietê-Jacaré and Mogi River watersheds.
São Carlos has 165 years (Foundation in 1850).
In the 19th century, the town developed agriculture
(mainly coffee) but also occurred a first phase of industrial
development related to Italian immigration to São
Carlos.
São Carlos is known as a “CAPITAL OF TECHNOL-
OGY” its official nomination.
After the implementation of the School of Engineering
of the University of São Paulo in 1953 and of the Federal
University of São Carlos in 1968, the important role
of São Carlos has knowledge producer and technological
center was consolidated. The technical evolution of the
industry is due to the presence of University and Research
Institutes of international level.
São Carlos has, at present 1 PhD for 100 inhabitants.
This includes the town as a high producer of knowledge
and technical development in Latin America among
many cities of developed countries.
From the Gross Annual Product of São Carlos of R$ 12
billion 30% is a contribution of Science, Technology and
Innovation; the source of this contribution are research
projects, salaries from research workers, scientists, and
technicians, and research grants.
São Carlos has 1 tech for 1.093 inhabitants. High quality
industries with advanced (Report Science Hub, 2023),
technological development were introduced in São Carlos;
there are several companies with international insertion
and significate export contracts, with several countries.
São Carlos has 235 tech companies/start-ups in the near
future São Carlos will promote the Circular Economy, the
project of Smart and Sustainable Cities. To achieve this
it is necessary a further and decisive cooperation of the
Universities and Research Institutes in the areas of Environment,
Public Administration, Agribusiness, Artificial
Intelligence Human Health and Education. This will improve
the model of economic development integrated with
Science, Innovation, and Technology.
São Carlos is a relevant and important model for Brazil,
and in the future, it will promote, improve, and consolidate
its leadership of this model. It enhances beter quality
of life, good health and welfare for the population,
economic stability, high level of education and qualified
human life in all areas.
