secondary activities. Immigration was favorable to the
growth of cultural societies and a sense of mutual help
towards educational and social development.
The 1929 coffee crisis brought the agricultural
sector to a halt; thus, with their varied and diversified
knowledge, immigrants started working in urban
environments such as offices, commerce and factories,
as well as providing services and playing a role in civil
construction. All the while, farmers started pouring
their profit into several ventures in São Carlo: banks,
electricity companies, trams, phone booths, water
and sewage systems, theaters, hospitals and schools,
strengthening the city’s urban infrastructure and
industrialization.
With the aid of immigrant craftiness, the industrial
sector became the main source of revenue in São Carlos,
which, in the 50’s, was known as a relevant industrial
expression manufacturing center among inner cities
in the State of São Paulo. In the 50’s and 60’s, the
industrial sector was consolidated by the installation
of fridge, compressor and tractor factories, as well as a
great number of small and medium-sized companies,
which provided products and services.
The impulse for technological and educational
development in São Carlos was nursed to existence
by the immigrants; however, in April 1953, the
implementation of the Escola de Engenharia de São
Carlos (São Carlos Engineering School), associated with
the Universidade de São Paulo (USP) gave the city a
new, different reputation. In the 70’s, the sector was
improved upon and even qualified a tad further when
the Universidade Federal de São Carlos (UFSCar) was
inaugurated.
