EDUCATION
Universities boost strong educational
vocation in the city
São Carlos is known as the “National Tech Capital”
on account of housing an advanced compound formed
by two public universities, USP and UFSCar, two
Brazilian Agricultural Research Centers (Southeastern
Livestock and Agricultural Instrumentation), as well as
private universities.
Many are the benefits a university city provides to
its basic education, with programs, activities and
professionals ever more qualified and present from child
education to high school-level education.
School Network:
-61 Municipal Schools and 16 thousand students
From which, 50 are Municipal Centers for Child
Education, 10 Basic Education Municipal Schools and
1 is a School for Teens and Adults.
-49 State Schools and 27 thousand students
From which, 12 are full-time.
Universidade de São Paulo - USP: Created in 1953,
the São Carlos Engineering School (EESC) was initially
installed in the building that now houses the Scientific
and Cultural Dissemination Center (CDCC). It
is currently located in an area with 321,452 m2,
where the Institutes for Mathematical Sciences and
Computation and Physics and Chemistry are also
located, all of which provide undergraduate and postgraduation
degrees. It offers 10 undergraduate degrees
in Engineering: Aeronautic, Environmental, Civil,
Computer, Material and Manufacturing, Production,
Electric – Electronic, Electric – Energy and Automation
Systems, Mechanic and Mechatronics.
Universidade Federal de São Carlos - UFSCar:
Is a public college institution linked to the Ministry
of Education (MEC). It began its activities in 1970,
opening its door to the first 96 students of the Materials
Engineering course, a first in Latin America, and the
Science Graduation course. UFSCar currently offers 61
in-person undergraduate courses and 5 long-distance
courses; 72 post-graduation options, 40 of which
are for academic master’s degrees, 7 of which are for
professional master’s degrees and 25 of which are for
doctorate degrees. Additionally, there are 62 on-going
specialization courses.
Embrapa: The Brazilian Agricultural Research
Corporation has two units in São Carlos: Agricultural
Instrumentation and Southeastern Livestock.
Agricultural Instrumentation is a specialized center
which acts as a science and tech institution working
towards developing an economical and self-sustained
form of Brazilian agriculture. Southeastern Livestock,
on the other hand, is responsible for developing the
Canchim bovine race, a result of breeding practices
started in 1940 by veterinarian and zootechnician Dr.
Antônio Teixeira Vianna.
