São Carlos: progress since its founding days
The city is named after the patron saint São Carlos Borromeu
São Carlos was founded on November 4th 1857, a
few years after a path was drawn to the Cuiabá and
Goiás gold mines. The pioneer settlement was built
around a chapel and its inhabitants were descendants
of the Arruda Botelho family, which were the first
Sesmaria do Pinhal landowners.
Coffee farms were the first large-scale economic
activities established in São Carlos, which combined
with the railroad that arrived in 1884, led to the
organization of an efficient product outflow into the
Port of Santos, facilitating exportation efforts.
The railroad also contributed to the central area’s
exceptional politics and economy, though it also played
the role of social phenomenon which brought great
development to the region altogether. In the late 19th
century, São Carlos started bringing in immigrants
from several countries – primarily Italy and Germany
– who would work in coffee plantations and perform
